Nominations open for Brodniak Cultural Education Award
Nominations are now being accepted for the Walter A. Brodniak Award for Cultural Education.
The Brodniak Award was created to foster growth of the cultural arts in the school district. Brodniak, Anacortes School District Superintendent from 1973 to 1977, was a staunch believer in the powerful contributions that arts make to our community. Each year, the award is given to a student, faculty member, administrator, school director, community member or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural arts in the Anacortes School District in the past year.
Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2019. Please use the online form (www.asd103.org) to submit your nomination. A selection committee will review the nominations and make a recommendation to the School Board. The recipient will be recognized at the May 16, 2019 board meeting.

Kindergarten enrollment now open
Online registration for kindergarten is now open! Children entering kindergarten must be age 5 on or before August 31, 2019, in order to register. For online registration information,click here. We will host a Kindergarten Parent Information Night on April 22 at 6 p.m. at Anacortes Middle School.
Kindergarten Round Up will be on Thursday April 25 and Friday April 26, 2019. We request that you register online before attending Kindergarten Round Up.
Plan to attend Kindergarten Round Up with your child. Health and developmental screenings will be provided. You choose which session to attend. You may arrive at Round Up at any time during a scheduled session, but please be sure to allow up to one hour for the entire process. Bring the following required paperwork with you to Round Up:
Child’s Birth Certificate or Passport
Completed Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS)
Child’s Immunization Record
If applicable, parenting plan/court order and/or proof of guardianship

"How to Build Your College List".
You'll learn how to find schools that "fit" and are affordable. This is a helpful seminar for 8th graders on up and their families. Parents/ guardians are welcome without their student, students are welcome without their parents, but you are encouraged to come together if you can.

Hear from an admissions officer at Chapman University, a private university in California with a broad selection of colleges and majors, from business, to science and healthcare, to media arts and more. They have generous need and merit-based financial aid. This is an open opportunity to ask about any aspect of college admissions, including financial aid regardless of whether Chapman is a school that interests you. We'll also continue our discussion of how to find your best colleges, and how to make them want you!

March Equity Film Series: Miss Representation
Join us on March 28 at 7:00 pm, in the AHS Library, for Miss Representation, an examination of the impact on girls of cultural messages about female potential. STUDENT POETRY SLAM
The Anacortes School District and The Skagit River Poetry Foundation present a showing of the movie Deaf Jam with a Student Poetry Slam Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 at the Anacortes High School Library. High School and College students are welcome to attend and read their poetry. Admission is free.
Deaf Jam is an inspirational documentary about students at a New York City high school for the deaf performing their poetry using ASL signing. Dialogue combines both audio and subtitles. See the trailer, here https://vimeo.com/28547215
Students wishing to read their work need to sign up at 6:00 on the day of the performance in the AHS library. The slam will not be judged but there will be prizes for each poet. The slam will begin at 6:30 with the 70-minute film to follow after.
Both the slam and the film will be open to the public and all students.

AAUW Scholarship Fundraiser Tea - March 30
Come join the Anacortes Activist Student Union and the AHS Green Club on March 23rd for Fidalgo for the Future: an island-wide clean-up and community conversation on plastic waste. Meet in the AHS commons at 9:00am with work gloves and high spirits. This is a great way to engage in your community (and also earn community service hours!) Snacks will be provided.
Visit the Anacortes Farmers Market - fresh produce, great food, crafts, live music, and more. Every Saturday starting May 4th, 9AM to 2PM at the Depot (7th St and R Ave) - Family friendly!

Is your child interested in trying lacrosse? Anacortes Lacrosse Club is offering its annual Spring Clinic on 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, and 5/10 from 5:00pm-6:00pm at Smiley's Bottom fields near the High School. The Clinic is for players in grades K-2nd. Cost is $50 and no experience or equipment is required (except for a mouthguard). Come out and learn all about this fun team sport! Announcing the inaugural season of the Challenger Division for 2019! The Little League Challenger Division is an adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. This is the first year that Anacortes will offer this program and we can’t wait to share our love of baseball with this fantastic group of kids! This team is open to children age 4 to 18: or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school. Anacortes Parks & Recreation Youth Track and Field Program
Put on those running shoes, warm-up your throwing arm, and get ready to have some fun. Boys and girls in grades 1st-6th are eligible to participate in a fun and exciting program. Kids will have the opportunity to learn the basic FUNdamentals of sprinting, mid-distance and distance running, long jump, high jump, shot-put, discus, and safety javelin. Participants will also have the opportunity to test their skills in an organized track meet on the last day of the program, and ribbons will be handed out to all competitors. The details are as follows.

Anacortes Senior College is taking enrollment for the spring term, April 9 to May 16. Classes meet Tuesdays or Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Anacortes Middle School. Intriguing topics among the 11 classes offered include: how tools has defined human history, your amazing body’s response to physical exercise, the ins/outs of investing in stocks and bonds, and discovering the best ways to learn a new language.

Spring Break registration for Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County
Clubs in Anacortes, Concrete, Mount Vernon, and Sedro-Woolley will be open for Spring Break, April 1-5, 2019. Current members can register online at www.skagitclubs.org from now until March 15. New members are encouraged to contact their local Club about membership. Registration is required for participation and the cost is $160 per member for the week. Friends of Skagit Beaches Lecture Series
Puget Sound Mussel Monitoring: Long-term Active Biological Monitoring of Nearshore Contaminants: Toxic contaminants are entering the nearshore food web of the Puget Sound, especially along shorelines adjacent to highly urbanized areas. Jennifer Lanksbury, wildlife biologist, WDFW, will discuss how mussels are being studied as pollutant monitors through very successful collaborative efforts among conservation groups, citizen science volunteers and government partners. She will share the results of two rounds of mussel monitoring specifically in the Puget Sound. Friday, March 15, 2019. 7:00-8:30 p.m. NW Ed. Services Dist. Public invited to open house at Cornet Bay Retreat Center - The public is invited to visit the Cornet Bay Retreat Center at Deception Pass State Park for an open house in March. The event will showcase the center and its many features to businesses, community members and event planners. The open house is from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Deception Pass State Park, 400 Cornet Bay Road, Oak Harbor. (Driving directions.)
During the open house, attendees can explore the center on their own, ask for a guided tour and take part in several interesting programs.
The day’s programs include:
- Junior Ranger activities at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. for children ages four to 12.
- An introduction to the two new AmeriCorps members at Deception Pass.
- Guided nature hike to the Goose Rock area at 3 p.m.
- Information about the upcoming Deception Pass Bridge painting project.
The open house is an opportunity to get to know community groups such as the Audubon Society, Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Deception Pass State Park Foundation. Information booths will cover topics such as forage fish, Pacific mammals and plastics education.
That evening, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Deception Pass State Park Foundation will also hold its annual meeting at the retreat center. The meeting is open to the public.
Deception Pass State Park Manager Jason Armstrong, Deception Pass Park Foundation President Matt Klope and Interpretive Specialist Joy Kacoroski will speak about the successes of 2018 and future plans for the park, followed by a question-and-answer period.
Refreshments will be served at the evening meeting.
