Resource for Orange County Families

We wanted to share a list of mental health, financial and food resources surrounding Orange County in case you or someone you know may need them. As a school, we would really like to provide options for families that are struggling in this area. Please let us know if you are in need of more assistance. We are here for you all during these times, and will get through this together.

You may find the list of resources here.

Resource Site For All Parents

We worked together to create a resource site for our families and for parents who are now faced with homeschooling their children. Please share with anyone who you feel could benefit from the site!

Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon Theme for the 2020-2021 School Year is:

The Cold War

Exploring the history of the Cold War, the Space Race and Astronomy, Reading Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, and exploring the Art and Music of the Cold War Era are just some of the exciting themes discussed in the AG approved elective.

High School students of all abilities are needed to form a team that then compete at a regional level to then have the opportunity to move to the state competition in Sacramento in March.

A student does not need to be an expert in all ten areas, instead, we are looking for students of all academic abilities to create a well-rounded team. The Decathlon is about creating a team, and the coaches and teammates work together throughout the course.

Please pass on the informational Flyer and Interest Survey to all of your families.

Community Connections

We want to thank everyone for all your support of the Community Connections program all year long. We truly enjoyed building community with everyone and fostering connections. We are ending the school year with a bang, by punctuating it with a service project.

Please join Cabrillo Point Academy in our digital Write-A-Thon challenge 2020! Take part in this all family service project and write a note of encouragement to help spread a little sunshine to local seniors and those who care for them.

The challenge is to have all Senior residents and health care workers at Freedom Village in Lake Forest receive a digital card of hope! When your card, art, or special message is complete, take a picture of it and email as a pdf to maricka.parker@cabrillopointacademy.org. It will then be shared with the residents and staff.

Let’s make this challenge go viral. Share with families and friends and post on your favorite social media and tag Cabrillo Point Academy. The challenge runs through June 11. Let’s show our community how much we care!

Please ask you HST for more information!

High School Counselor Support

Career Technical Education (CTE) Spotlight Information #5:

Did you know that Irvine Valley College has Career Pathways that prepare learners for employment in specific industries? Demand for workers is high and the pay is competitive!

Here are just a few of their many programs they offer:

Concurrent Enrollment

  • Submit forms before June 30th: Please have your student’s form submitted to the High School Counselor prior to June 30th. There will not be anyone available to sign the forms in the month of July.

  • Official Transcripts: If your student is taking courses in spring 2020, please remember that official transcripts need to be requested from the college to be sent, directly to Inspire, as soon as final grades are entered for the term.

Important Information for Student Athletes

Is your student an athlete? You will want to ask them if they want to play a college sport? If so, that’s great! There are a few things we need to do.

  • Students seeking to be eligible as collegiate student-athletes must complete NCAA approved coursework while in high school through only HQT-led Edgenuity or ChoicePlus Academy (McGraw Hill). There are a few other curriculum providers that have NCAA approved courses, like Williamsburg Academy or UC Scout or they can be taken at the community college with prior approval from your school counselor.

  • Students will need to complete Sixteen (16) NCAA approved courses in the areas of history, English, math and science and world language. This is congruent with AG requirements as well.

    • Ten (10) core courses need to be completed before the beginning of their 7th semester and seven (7) of those courses need to be in the areas of English, math and science.

  • Students should also register on the NCAA Eligibility Center website while in 10th grade. This Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete has a lot of helpful information for families as well.

Wellness Resources

If you or someone you know is struggling, you are not alone. There are many supports, services and treatment options that may help. Seneca Family Agencies is just one avenue to get the support you and your family may need. They provide a wide range of services: Short term mental health services, wrap-around services, crisis stabilization services, outpatient clinics, probation services, transitional youth programs, therapeutic behavioral services, intensive case management, foster youth/ adoption services.

Student Support

As the 2019-2020 school year is quickly drawing to a close, the Intervention team wants to thank you for all of your support!

Many of you are wondering what online opportunities we will have during the summer.

  • Reading Horizons Discovery and Elevate will continue without interruption throughout the summer.

  • On August 1-3, the students will roll over for the 2020-2021 school year.

In an effort to provide the best, most cost-effective intervention, we will not be using Pathblazer next year.

  • Pathblazers for reading and math will end on June 22 for all students.

    • In August, we will provide the HSTs a survey to fill out, to place students in one of our new intervention options.

For students that qualify, we are excited to let you know that for the 2020-2021 school year we are offering for free:

  • Mathseeds TK-3rd grades

  • Mathletics K-10th grade

  • Reading Eggs TK-4th grade

  • EggsPress 2nd – 8th grade

Renaissance Learning is no longer offering English in a Flash for our Multilingual Learners. We are delighted to let you know that we will be able to offer:

  • BrainPop ELL - Free for EL students

For those interested, until June 15th, you can access Brainpop ELL for free off of our Intervention website

Special Education

Your student’s case manager will be contacting you if your child is due for an initial or triennial evaluation. Most of these assessments will not take place while schools are physically closed, as they require direct contact between students and staff. Instead, these assessments will occur once schools physically open. However, some types of speech assessments may be completed virtually. Your child’s case manager will contact you if your child is due for an assessment at this time.

If your child’s IEP includes extended school year (ESY), we will be offering ESY services this summer. Your child’s case manager will contact you in the next few weeks regarding your child’s service(s).

  • Please feel free to refer to this document, which outlines up-to-date information about the Amazon punchout system.

  • Please note: Textbooks cannot be rented through the punchout system. For rentals, Amazon requires a credit card be kept on file, in case items aren’t returned or rental periods need to be extended (not something that charter schools are able to accommodate).

Quick reminder: Please only request one Outschool class per order. The vendor provides one receipt per class, and for processing purposes, it’s easiest to process one class per order.

Homeschooling Advice

10 Ways to Create and Maintain Balance as a Homeschooling Parent

1. Know your priorities. Be clear with yourself about what is most important. Make sure everyone in the family knows what those things are. Talk regularly about the reasons why your family does things the way you do. Be open with each other when it feels like it’s time to revisit or reaffirm your family’s priorities.

2. Always start with a plan, and be flexible enough to change the plan as needed. If you need help with planning for the younger grades, our parent planners can be a big help. Planning ahead really helps the family’s rhythm stay steady and keeps each member on track academically.
