WASHINGTON MONUMENT
The Washington Monument is located in Washington, D.C. The monument stands due east of the Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Memorial. Washington Monument was was built to honor George Washington. It was to show gratitude to Washington who helped to create a new form of government.
The building of Washington Monument was started on July 4, 1848, by Robert Mills. The monument was completed on Dec. 6, 1884. It took 100 years for the monument to be completed due to lack of funds and the architects death. It finally opened to the public on
Oct. 9, 1888. The Washington Monument is 555 feet 5 1/8 inches tall and has 1898 steps. It is made out of granite and faced with marble. The Washington Monument is the tallest stone structure in the world.
The Washington Monument is one of the world's most popular tourist attractions. It has about 80,000 visitors each year.
