Long Lake CSD Fall Newsletter

October 17, 2022

Dear LLCS School Community,

We are off to a great start this school year! While the leaves are barely hanging on at this point, what a beautiful summer and an equally excellent fall we have had here in the Adirondacks!

We have reached the five week mark of the first quarter, which is an important mile marker in the school year. Our school year consists of four quarters that are ten weeks apiece, and at each five week mark we have an opportunity to reflect on what we've accomplished, challenges we've experienced, and think about adjustments we can make to learn and grow. For sports fans, it's a lot like halftime. We are proud of all we've accomplished in the past five weeks and how much our students have already grown, and we're looking forward to another positive and productive five weeks ahead.

Two district wide instructional changes we're excited about is the implementation of our new K-6 math program - Eureka Math - Great Minds, and upgrading our classroom technology to interactive display boards. Our K-12 math program worked together to research math programs and as a team selected Eureka. Our teachers have worked together to learn the program and are excited about the changes it has brought to their lessons and student learning opportunities. We utilized our State Reserve Funds to purchase Promethean Boards for all classrooms, which has created a unified tech approach across grade levels and subject areas as well as an advanced experience for our teachers and students. It has been neat to see the discoveries and teamwork these devices have already prompted.

We are happy to welcome new staff members to our team this school year. Each person brings a wide array of professional experiences and we are grateful to have them jump right in and have immediate impact in our small school.

Please join me in welcoming the following staff members to our team:

Mrs. Donna Furlong, 3-6 Math Teacher

Mrs. Liz Hosley, District Treasurer

Mr. Kevin Willette, Bus Driver

Mrs. Nikki Wonders, School Psychologist

Our next mile-marker will be the end of the first quarter, when we'll welcome parents & guardians in for Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 17, 2022. These will be in-person conferences with a virtual option by request. All K-6 students will have a conference scheduled with their classroom teacher, all 7 & 8th grade students will have at least two conferences scheduled, with additional conferences available by parent or teacher request, and all 9-12 grade conferences will be based on parent and teacher request. Stay tuned for more information from the Guidance and Main Offices on scheduling conferences.

We appreciate your continued support. Thanks for all you do to help us be at our best.

Sincerely,

Ms. Noelle Short

Open House a Success!

Big picture
Thanks to all who participated in our Open House including our students, staff, families, and community organizations. It was wonderful to have people in the building once again and see the enthusiasm that our Scavenger Hunt brought out in our students and their families. It was a great way to kick off the school year.

Donations Needed for School Culture Buddy Event

The School Culture Committee is hosting the first buddy event of the year on Friday, October 28. Students will be meeting their new buddy for the year and working together to make a scarecrow. These scarecrows will be placed around the school and in town.

The committee is looking for donations of jeans, flannels/button downs, t-shirts, pillowcases (preferably plain), gallon milk jugs, and fun scarecrow looking hats! These donations can be dropped off in the main office. We can’t wait for you to see the student’s creations!

If you have questions, please reach out to Lacey Dukette at ldukett@longlakecsd.org.

Thank you to our School Board Members!

We are grateful for the time, commitment, and dedication our school board members put forth to support our school. We couldn't do it without them. Please join us in thanking Brian Penrose, Mike Farrell, Trisha Hosley, Tara Murphy, and Joan Paula for their service.

First Grade Leaf Study

First grade students enjoyed studying leaves this fall. Some activities included examining leaves under a microscope, learning to name the parts of the leaves, listening to the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert, and collecting leaves to create their own leaf person and then writing about where the wind blew their leaf person!

Hands on Learning in Principles of Engineering Class

Mr. Burns leads a lesson on forging in Principles of Engineering class. This hands-on-learning experience requires students to watch Mr. Burns model techniques, then try it on their own with support, and ultimately the goal is for the the students to have the skills and confidence to do it on their own.

Science is Fun at Every Age!

We are Happy to Have Stewart's Milk in Our Cafeteria this year!

When other companies told us we were too far away, Stewart's said, "Let's figure it out!" We are very happy to welcome Stewart's milk into our cafeteria this school year, and are grateful for their efforts to work out this new partnership with our cafeteria staff.
