A MESSAGE FROM MS. ELLISON
Dear Glen Grove Families,
I hope that you have all enjoyed these fantastic fall days! We have been so lucky! With the fall season also comes our annual anti-bullying unit that is taught across every single Glen Grove classroom. Although we do not have a huge bullying challenge at Glen Grove, it is very important that we continue to take this issue seriously so as to prevent future concerns.
I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you a bit about how we prevent, educate and respond to bullying at Glen Grove. We have trained all of our educators in the research based Second Step Anti-Bullying curriculum. Students are currently receiving weekly lessons about bullying as part of their social/emotional learning this month. In addition to the weekly lessons, we also have shared information about the D34 Bullying Tip Line and Safe2Help Illinois.
At Glen Grove, we use this definition to help our students understand what bullying means:
Bullying is intentional, targeted, and repeated negative actions where there is a real or perceived power imbalance between students. These negative actions typically include physical contact, words, exclusion, gestures, name calling, rumors, teasing or intimidation. Cyberbullying occurs when electronic communications are employed to perform the above actions.
Through these classroom lessons, we are teaching our students how to recognize, report and refuse bullying. In grades 4 and 5 students learn how to be a supportive "upstander" and when/how to report cyberbullying.
We know that children are learning how to work, learn and play in large groups, small groups and one on one situations in the classroom and during recess. When conflicts between students happen, we take a problem-solving approach and work on restoring and repairing relationships when someone has been harmed. We work with students proactively and responsively with the intention of helping everyone move forward with learning and being a positive member of our community.
Our school staff members respond immediately and with compassion to a student who reports bullying or school violence. Additionally, our staff members monitor hotspots that may need additional supervision or monitoring or if there are any known bullying behaviors or targets of bullying behaviors in our building.
I know this is an important topic for our students and families. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about our approach to bullying prevention, education, and response.
In partnership,
Kate Ellison
Glen Grove Principal

We will provide information to families at a particular school if this does happen, though communication may occur on short notice.
We appreciate your understanding!
FOOD & NUTRITION SERVICE IN D34: SUPPORTING STUDENT HEALTH & WELLNESS
The District 34 Food & Nutrition Services team is dedicated to making sure every D34 student has a positive and nutritious lunch experience. We follow the the guidelines of of the federal government’s National School Lunch Program, which allows us to provide meals to all children, including providing assistance to low-income families through the free/reduced breakfast/lunch program.
We want to hear your ideas and experiences as families of our customers, District 34 students! Click the link below to complete a survey from Food Services.
Your input will help us make the best choices in food options and in programming to make a positive impact on the health and wellness of your children.
FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE
If you need any help or support during this difficult time, please do not hesitate to call Jennifer Hastings, RN, our Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394.
All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:45 a.m. at (847) 657-2394. The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.
If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m., please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.
BAND NEWS 🎶🎵🎶
The bands are sounding great! We are now just a handful of rehearsals away from our first concert and both bands sound terrific. I know that they can’t wait to perform for you because they are always asking when their first concert will take place. Please encourage your students to continue practicing at home. Often the best encouragement is having a parent or loved one sit down beside them and listen to them play.
Upcoming concert:
When: Wednesday, December 7th
Time: The concert will begin at 6:30pm, but students should arrive by 6:15pm to warm-up in the cafeteria and find their seats.
Where: Glen Grove School Gym
Dress: White tops, black bottoms and dress shoes, but girls and boys are welcome to wear any combination of black and white.
(Dresses or pants are both acceptable. Navy is fine if you already own that instead of black.)
SCIENCE CORNER
3rd grade Gators have continued expanding their science knowledge of forces and motion through the completion of static electricity hands-on activities. From rolling cans to making plastic rings float in air, they have been looking at how positive and negative particles interact with one another and cause motion. We are currently working our way to the end of Unit 1, and have recently shifted our attention to another holder of an invisible force: magnets. Students have begun to see how static electricity and magnetism are similar to each other, and will be soon identifying an everyday problem that can be solved with the help of magnetic force. Please ask your students about their scientific discoveries, and take some time to check out the 3rd grade Bitmoji classroom I've set up for their individual exploration of Unit 1 topics. The classroom will change with each new unit they meet.
4th & 5th grade Gators will soon be starting up Unit 2, so stay tuned. Great things to come!!!

Paying for Lost /Damaged Library Books
The district has a new way of handling payments for lost/damaged books. The replacement cost of the book(s) will be billed through your student’s PowerSchool account. Your payment allows us to buy replacement copies of lost and damaged books. If the book is found within the 2022-2023 school year please return the book to the school and the district will issue a refund to you. Students can check their library account at any time by logging into Destiny Discover. Under My Stuff, students can see their current checkouts with the due date for each item.
The SORA App
Has your child told you about the SORA app yet? Each class was introduced to the app during their library time. It is a reading app for students by OverDrive. Students have access to thousands of eBooks and audiobooks. Students sign in using their district username and password. Students have access to the district collection as well The Digital Library of Illinois (Glenview Public Library). Students can check out 3 items and place 3 holds at a time. The app lets the user know approximately how long their wait will be for the materials. Students can only see age appropriate titles.
