In Solidarity with our AAPI Community
In the wake of the recent shootings in Atlanta and amidst the rise in racist rhetoric and attacks, we stand in solidarity with our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began last year, hate crimes against Asian Americans in major U.S. cities increased by nearly 150 percent in 2020 —even as the number of overall hate crimes fell.
To help create a safe space for our students to discuss and process these events, CPS has released a resource guide for educators, Responding to the Violence Toward the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community. Parents and caregivers may also find this resource helpful in having discussions with their students.
To our AAPI community, we see you and we support you. We must continue to educate our students and ourselves about the injustices that exist, as we support each other in anti-racist work.
