CANNON CONNECTION
A newsletter for Cannon Elementary families - 2018-2019
WEEK OF OCTOBER 29, 2018
Hi Cannon Parents!
BIG thanks to all of our parents who were able to participate in the school tours last week! We enjoyed showing off YOUR child's special school and providing some background information about the design and development of our new campus! At this time, we are not planning to conduct additional parent tours, but we look forward to seeing our parents who were unable to attend at one of our campus family events throughout the year!
This week our school will be joining other schools across the nation in celebration of Red Ribbon Week! This special week is to remind everyone about the dangers of drug usage. The red ribbon is the symbol behind the nation’s fight against drugs.
Each day during the week, we will have a special "dress-up" day, so please encourage your child to participate! See the image below to see what we have planned for each day of Red Ribbon Week 2018!
Proud to be your principal,
Mrs. Blizzard

Campus Reminders
BIG THANKS to all of our parents for your help as we have adjusted to MANY new procedures at Cannon, involving arrival & dismissal. Your help with the following reminders is appreciated!
- IS YOUR CHILD BRINGING BREAKFAST FROM HOME? PLEASE READ Cannon students are eligible to participate in a program called Breakfast in the Classroom, which is a federal program. This program is designed to provide the opportunity for all students to be able to have a healthy start to their day by enjoying breakfast in their classrooms. Our school cafeteria serves breakfast items that meet the nutritional guidelines for this federal program from 7:15 - 7:40 each morning, for students who wish to purchase breakfast at school. Students may also bring their own breakfast, but need to make sure that any breakfast items being sent to school are also healthy and nutritious. Students will not be allowed to eat snack foods, such as Cheez-Its, chips, cookies and other sugary foods at breakfast. Healthy options, such as breakfast sandwiches, breakfast bars, yogurt, fruit, etc... are acceptable to send, in order for our school to remain in compliance with the federal guidelines of this program. Breakfast at school is convenient and affordable too—student breakfast is only $1.45! If you qualify for free or reduced price meals, you also qualify for breakfast! There is no cost if you qualify for free and only $0.30 for reduced meals. Thank you in advance for your support parents!
- RECESS UPDATE We have had several questions about recess opportunities for our students. As you are aware, we have limited options, due to construction. Additionally, recent weather conditions have prevented all GCISD students from enjoying outdoor recess! Teachers may take students over to the front circle drive of the old school to play, as long as weather is permitting and there are not construction vehicles that need to be parked in this area. We are expecting warmer/dryer weather this week and are hopeful that our Cubs will be able to enjoy some outdoor play in this space until an exterior space at our new school is completed.
- SCHOOL BEGINS AT 7:40 - If you are still in the car lane or walking up to the school at 7:38-7:40, your child will not be able to be in class by 7:40. In other words, if you arriving "on time" (7:40 am) you are late! The doors lock at the 7:40 bell and students will be counted tardy if they arrive after this time. PLEASE make a slight adjustment to your morning routines to help your child arrive a few minutes earlier each day.
- The school parking lot that currently exists on our school property is for staff parking ONLY between 6:30-8:30 am & 1:30-3:30 pm. Student safety is our first priority and we cannot have cars pulling in or out of the parking areas during arrival/dismissal times. Cones will be set up to remind parents when the parking lot is closed for non-staff parking use.
- CROSSWALK ON COLLEGE HAS MOVED to the intersection of College & Pebblebrook. For our students/families that walk to school, please remember to use this crosswalk, to avoid having to cross in front of cars pulling into the drop-off/pick-up lane.
- PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IN RAIN GEAR -Due to the longer and uncovered walkways from car/bus lanes, we encourage all parents to dress their children in rain gear on days where there is heavy rain predicted! While we will certainly have staff outside with umbrellas to help out, we simply do not have enough staff members available to walk students to cars/buses individually under umbrellas.
HOW DO I GET INTO CANNON IF I NEED TO PICK MY CHILD UP, DROP SOMETHING OFF TO THE OFFICE, OR ATTEND A MEETING?
If you are coming to the campus to volunteer, drop off something, visit a teacher/student, or to drop off/pick up your child during the school day, you will walk down the same walkway towards the entrance students are using and make a right to follow the sidewalk to another door, just a short distance away. At this door, you will see an intercom mounted near the door and you will need to press the button and remain standing in front of the camera. After someone from the office answers you and is able to identify/verify your identity, they will release the lock so that you can enter through this door. Please stand in clear view of this camera in order to gain admittance and respond loudly/clearly when prompted by a staff member. This door takes you through the administrative suite of offices and will lead you to the reception area, where you can check in with our front office staff. This entrance forces all guests to enter the building in an area that is secured from the remainder of the school.
Please note that neither of these entrances are permanent. They are being used as temporary entrances until we are able to access our main entrance, after the demolition of our old school.
