Message from Mrs. Kilday
Hello Rodman families.
I hope you had a wonderful weekend. It's an exciting week at the Rodman as we start our Rodman Reads program! Watch your child's backpack for details!
Parent conferences will be held this Wednesday and Thursday. If you have not already scheduled a time to meet with your child's classroom teacher, please reach out to them. Because of conferences, Wednesday is an early release day. The students will be dismissed at 11:30.
Nurse Bailey tells me we have more students signing up for the pool testing which takes place every Tuesday. THANK YOU!! This is such an important tool in keeping our youngest learners safe.
Mrs. Crespi tells me we have more people borrowing from our libraries! This is wonderful. If you have not checked it out yet please do. The books are right outside our office, room 9.
I hope you enjoy this week's newsletter. As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.
Have a wonderful evening!
Donna
Rodman Early Childhood School Improvement Areas
In case you were unable to watch our last school committee meeting, I would like to share with you our priority areas for this year's school improvement plan. This year the preschool will have three major focus areas:
#1: Achieving Educational Excellence and Ensuring Equity
Every student will achieve significant personal and academic growth through a rigorous, equitable and inspiring educational experience that is responsive to individual needs and features research based, high quality instruction.
School Focus and Rationale: Our focus for the 2021-2022 school year will be improving math outcomes for all preschoolers as demonstrated by increased proficiency in the math standards, specifically as it relates to math based vocabulary.
Rationale: We have identified this area of need as a result of educator observations and student data identifying the need for support in the ability to apply rote math skills to novel situations including those involving math based vocabulary.(more/less, same, how many)
#2: Cultivating School Culture and Climate
Every student will flourish in an intellectually stimulating and physically and emotionally safe educational environment that supports an authentic sense of belonging and well-being.
School Focus and Rationale: Our focus for the 2021-2022 school year will be improving social and emotional skills of all students, specifically those demonstrating anxiety and/or depression and those with a history of trauma.
Rationale: These internalizing behaviors were noted to be increased on our SEL screener during the Spring of 2021. We continue to see evidence of anxiety in our classrooms during the current school year.
#3: Transforming Teaching and Learning
Every educator will build his/her/their capacity to provide rigorous, relevant, and culturally responsive learning experiences that engage, challenge and support all students. Purposeful curriculum and instructional design that engages students in deeper learning ensures that every student receives transformational experiences that promote student agency, develop individual talents and interests, and foster each child’s critical thinking, collaboration and citizenship skills.
School Focus and Rationale: Our Focus for the 2021-2022 school year will be on educating ourselves on the concepts of project based learning in order to create two PBL units based on social science standards and science and technology to be implemented in the Spring 2023.
Rationale: Students need to be able to apply knowledge they have learned in new and novel situations and engage in inquiry based learning. Project based learning helps to build the skills necessary to work collaboratively, integrate knowledge and utilize critical thinking skills. The focus is on inquiry and the application of knowledge, both of which our students need support with.

News from our CAPT (Parent Volunteer Group)
Mission
Rodman parents, guardians and teachers formed CAPT , a parent Teacher organization at the Rodman a few years ago to help support the school’s mission of inclusion and community. CAPT supports and sponsors fun, family friendly activities throughout the year and supports the work of the school.
Our most recent CAPT meeting was held last Wednesday. We discussed lots of fun activities to support the program. Please remember to donate your gently used coats to our Coats for Kids campaign.
