May's Habit of Mind - Metacognition (Thinking about your Thinking)
Metacognition is about teaching kids to think about their thinking and it is all about reflection on their actions and thinking. Asking the question, "What led me to think this way?" is just one way to get kids to think deeply about their work.
This is not an easy task for kids so they have to be taught how to do it and given the opportunity to do it on a regular basis. Just like any other habit of mind metacognition is a muscle that must be built and trained.
How do I help my child with metacognition?
- Get your child to answer the question "Why?" on a regular basis.
- When your child says "Is this right?" Reply with, "What makes you think it is?"
- Get your child to verbalize what they are thinking as much as possible.
