Lowell Memo: Issue #12
January 17, 2014
Published by Lowell School & the Lowell PTA
Greetings from Lowell!
January weather is indeed upon us! I thank you for being sure your children are dressed appropriately so they are able to enjoy outdoor resource as much the weather allows. I also thank you for taking care as you navigate the school area on foot and in your vehicles so that we can keep everyone safe. Please take a few minutes to review important traffic and parking reminders below.
As you read this, know that I am excited for the continued opportunities that lay before us this school year and the planning that is already underway for next. Please review this week's Memo for the ways we are doing both.
Thank you again for being a wonderfully supportive school community!

Important Traffic & Parking Reminders
In particular, please note:
Keeping Driveways Clear- Please do not block the driveways on Willow if the pick-up line extends beyond the pick-up/drop-off zone. It is important that we are good neighbors and do not compromise people's access to their homes. In addition, tickets may be issued if police observe this practice.
Willow Parking Restrictions- Please be alert to parking restriction signs in the Lowell area. Wheaton Police and city engineering continue to monitor and make adjustments to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow.
Cut-Out on Illinois- Please only use this for a.m. kindergarten pick-up, p.m. kindergarten drop-off, picking up sick children, and dropping off items that will take under 5 minutes. Please do not stop with your car outside of the cut-out for safety and traffic flow purposes.
Drop-off & Pick-up Zone on Willow - Students should only leave and load vehicles in the fenced in lane for safety. Please do not let students out of cards outside of that area on Willow.
Thank you again for your understanding and cooperation!
Looking for the Class of 2027!
Lowell School-wide Reading Incentives
Sheets have gone home and are due back on Friday, February 14th. Students can earn a free ticket to Great America!
Kane County Cougars
- Starts: January 20
- Ends: March 14
Watch for Game Plan sheets from your child's teacher to see their reading goal. Lowell students will be recognized at the Kane County Cougar games on April 11th and May 22nd (Both are 6:30 game times).
De-clutter and donate to support the Lowell Jamboree!
Plans are well underway for this year's Jamboree on Friday, February 28th, between 5 and 8 p.m. Be on the lookout for several new games and attractions this year! Also, in an attempt to maximize our prize budget, we will be placing a box in the office to collect any gently used knick-knacks you might want to de-clutter from your own home. Bouncy balls, Happy Meal toys, rainbow loom bracelets, books, matchbox cars, stickers, pencils, figurines, any little new or gently-used toys that you don't mind parting with will be accepted throughout the month of January. These items will be re-distributed as prizes, saving Lowell money and saving the earth at the same time. Thanks for your support!

The Green Corner
Christmas tree recycling will be available in Wheaton the weeks of January 13th and January 20th. (Please note this is shifted back a week due to the inclement weather.) Simply remove all the decorations from your tree and leave it at the curb on your regular garbage pickup day. No garbage sticker is needed.
Chess Club Corner
- Aidan Flanagan
- Gabrielle Horn
- Jacob Horn
- Max Stankoskey
- Jordan Winter
The Lowell team was up against very high rated chess players, but was not deterred. The kids took each game in their stride. Although team trophies were not awarded at this tournament, Lowell had an impressive day because each Lowell team member won at least two games. Each Lowell team member was awarded the "Elite Chess" ribbon.
The team did a fabulous job and should be very proud!
