Welcome to the Leeds SCITT Newsletter
Welcome to the Leeds SCITT Newsletter. Our aim is to share good practice across our Partnership, keeping all interested parties up to speed with key information and share tips on how to become outstanding trainee teachers. This is your newsletter, so please feel free to email and share your experiences of how you or your colleagues have used innovative strategies/resources which have contributed to pupils making excellent progress.
Please remember to scroll down for tips on how to evidence TS4 and to gain top tips from your fellow trainees.
Helpful reminders and points to consider!
This week…
- Continue to set focused targets during your mentoring meetings to support you in addressing key areas. You could use the language of the Teachers' Standards as outlined in the placement report (also located in the Stage 3 Manual pages 65 -80) to aid you and your SBT in the writing and evidencing of these targets. Remember it is important to share these targets with all of the host teachers in the department to ensure lesson observation feedback is focused, to allow you to evidence the targets you and your SBT have set.
- Continue to email your SEF to your SBT 24hrs prior to your mentor meeting and cc your Link Tutor in too.
- Try and get involved with whole school or departmental initiatives. If there are any extra curricular clubs you would like to help out in, volunteer! There maybe a teaching and learning group you would like to join, ask! I am sure your colleagues would relish the opportunity to spend some time sharing their idea and experiences with you and vice versa.
- Try a new questioning technique, see below for some ideas.
- Think about the homework or the out of class activities you are setting your pupils to complete. What is its purpose? Is it challenging? Is it differentiated? Can all pupils in your class access it? What can you and the pupils gain from these opportunities?

Evidencing the Teachers' Standards
Each week we will focus on one of the Teachers’ Standards, to look at ways on how this specific 'Standard' could be evidenced in supporting you in becoming outstanding in this area. This week we will take a look at TS4 -Plan and teach well-structured lessons.
How can we evidence TS4?
For your SEB, the TS4 Standard can be evidenced in your Lesson Observations, Lesson Plans relating to two or three Key Stages and your Progression Map. Take a look at this link, as this may provide you with some additional ideas of how to gain evidence to achieve this 'Standard'.

Teaching and learning ideas! - A few ideas to help you and your pupils in the classroom.
In support of maintaining good pace for learning, here are some timers you can use in your power point slides. These could be used to remind you and the pupils the length of time they have to complete an activity or task. The timer could remind you and your pupils when it is time for feedback or time to show you and or their peers how they are progressing through the lesson.

Plenary grids
How It Works:
Print the grid out- laminate it- A4 or A3, or have a grid permanently stuck into the pupils' books. Then give pupils a dice to roll. Once to count along and once to count across. Whatever box the pupil randomly lands on is the task they must complete. Remember you can differentiate the grids based on pupil levels/grades- include Bloom's stems/Higher order thinking skills etc. Please note the grid should be personalised to your subject.
However, the below could be used as generic grid for all subjects.
Pupils could work individually or in pairs. See links for a hard copy: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rxy0hjew7od25ge/plenary%20grid.png?dl=0
or a notebook version with a spinning dice: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ttxdsbl1h11edq/Roll%20a%20Dice%20plenary%20grid.notebook?dl=0

Sharing good practice!
A big thank you to Harry Leigh for sharing his PowerPoint 'sharing ideas' slides with us. Harry says that these slides can easily be adapted for different topic areas and there are a lot of opportunities for work on whiteboards, collaboration and thinking.
