He was born on December 11, 1843 at Clausthal in the upper Harz mountains the son of a mining engineer he attended local high school showed his interest in biology and like his father a strong urge to travel

studied the bacteria that causes tuberculosis in 1882 and cholera in 1883 he also formulated Koch postulates Koch won the 1905 Nobel prize in physiology or medicine
