McTeacher Night
Coker's McTeacher Night will take place this Thursday (10/27) from 5:00-8:00. Please be sure to sign-up on the list outside my office to work either the first or second shift. Just about everything has been taken from 5:00-6:30 but there is plenty from 6:30-8:00 and we can certainly use all the help we can get. If you are struggling to figure out what to do with your kids, bring them with you. This is an event for our students and supports our school. Our Coker chorus will kick everything off at 5:00 in the playground area with the costume contest taking place at 6:00. See you there!
Called Faculty Meeting
We will have a brief faculty meeting on Tuesday (10/25) at 3:10 in the media center. We have some very important information to go over with everyone that deals with various areas of concern and involvement so please make plans to attend. The grade level that has duty will have to help out in the gym and then come to the meeting. TEAM D PLC/BLUE TEAM DON'T FORGET OUR MEETING TOMORROW AFTERNOON (10/24) at 3:10 in Adrian's classroom.
End of 1st 8 Weeks Grading Period
Believe it or not, this Wednesday (10/26) marks the end of our first grading period. Report cards will go home next Wednesday (11/2). At the four week point during our second eight weeks we are going to begin sending home progress reports in order to keep parents more informed. We believe that there is a way to easily print them off of IC and are working on it. As soon as we figure it out we will let everyone know.
IXL Update
We have had a delay with purchase orders this year and it has affected the renewal of IXL math and language. These programs should be up and running very soon. We do apologize for this but it has really been out of our hands. With this in mind and our students visiting the computer labs weekly, please ensure that they are on some type of structured educational program. A good rule of thumb is to focus on specific academic area weaknesses. Our overall performance on the Milestones assessment in ELA has shown us that this area seems to be a particular area of weakness for most Coker students. Anything that you can do to reinforce classroom instruction would be helpful.

Attendance Concerns
As we move further into our school year, please be consistent with our attendance procedures. We are already seeing students with several absences so please be sure and send a postcard at 3 absences and let me know when a student reaches 6 and I will make a phone call. The DOE is slowly releasing data to principals and in looking at our possible points earned for attendance last year it doesn't look very good. With CCRPI the state counts the percentage of students present less than 6 days. Last year it appears that we had approximately 49% of students present less than the 6 days. SO, IT APPEARS THAT 50%+ OF OUR STUDENTS MISSED 6 OR MORE DAYS! : (
Carol Dweck - A Study on Praise and Mindsets
Study on Praise and Mindsets
Ever stopped to think about how praise may negatively affect a student's work ethic? Me neither! But this brief video, FOR TEACHERS ONLY, will help teach us that praise can have an adverse effect on our students. Check it out! And I would encourage you to test out this strategy on your students and let me know if you discover a difference. It might take a little bit of getting used to but we can do this! We will share our experiences with this strategy later on in the year.
Hand Washing for Kids - Get Rid of Germs Learn How to Wash Your Hands
Hand Washing is IMPORTANT!
As we begin to experience more and more sickness around school we would ask that you allow your students to wash their hands some during the day, especially before lunch. Time doesn't always allow for hand washing but after one to two times of using hand sanitizer it doesn't work like it should. We are in the process of getting the water controls on the sinks in our boys and girls bathrooms fixed and/or replaced. As a former pre-kindergarten teacher, I couldn't stand to send my kids home with dirty hands and faces. Yuck! Please, please, help us with this request. We have experienced MANY issues with ABM cleaning our school lately but I'm being told that change is coming. I sure hope so but in the meantime keep entering any complaints you have via the link on the MCS website!! Meanwhile, please be sure and clean the desks in your classroom periodically and perhaps even make this an end of the day activity for your students. Most of them like to help. My high school students loved to help me do stuff like this and it sure saved time when I let them help me! The brief video above is a good one to share with your students about properly washing their hands.
