April Newsletter
April 9, 2018
From the Desk of the Principal
Dear Lesslie Families,
I hope you enjoyed spring break! Now, that we've returned to school, our focus will return to teaching and learning. During the months of April and May, students in 5K - 5th grades will take MAP testing. Students in 3rd - 5th grades will also take SCREADY and SCPASS, both are state assessments. MAP results will be used to measure student growth from the beginning of the year to the end of the school year. Please read reminders that will be sent home about testing.
A special thank you to everyone who attended our Literacy Day on March 28th. It was outstanding! Lesslie parents, grandparents, and guardians are second to none! I would love to see more parents, grandparents, and guardians attend our programs that support student learning. Shout Outs go to Ms. Ramet for planning our Literacy Day. Thank you Lisa Taylor, literacy coach, and Liz Bridges, district instructional coach, for supporting this special day.
A special thank you to Trey McDaniel for spearheading our Jump Rope for Heart. Thank you for helping our school raise and donate $3,588.35. to the National Heart Association.
Thank you to Ms. Osborne for working with our 2nd and 3rd graders to prepare them for the Agents of Change Performance! The performance was stellar! Thank you 2nd and 3rd grader teachers for your support. To everyone who volunteered to assist the night of the performance, you are appreciated!
Children First,
Seberina Myles, Ed. S.
Quote of the Month
“Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that a son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a nation.” —Nelson Mandela
"Our school values learning, achievement, collaboration, and responsibility as cornerstones of our learning community."

Math Tips
Try to show enthusiasm for what your children are doing in math. You might ask them each day at dinner or homework time what they studied in math that day. Let them explain the concepts they're working on, and follow up with questions. For instance, if they're learning about decimals, you could ask how decimal points are used in money (they separate the parts of a dollar from the whole dollar). Then, when your children finish their homework, have them show you how they solved a few problems. As they explain their methods to you, they'll be reinforcing their own skills. And they'll be proud to be teaching you something!
