What is an Estuary?
An estuary is a partially enclosed body of brackish water. Brackish means that the water is both salt water and fresh water. Estuaries often have a free connection to the open ocean and are transit zones between rivers and the sea.

The Roanoke Estuary and river basin are one of the six river basins on the coast of NC. The Roanoke Estuary is home to thousands of plants and animals and good fishing.
