Lead Learner's Corner
I hope October is treating you well so far! Lots to do and so little time...I understand. Thank you for the time, energy and love you put into your work here at Ridgecrest. It is recognized and truly appreciated. Please let me know if there is anything you need.
Celebrating T-2-4 success week prompted me to look through old pictures of my college graduation, and it brought back some memories. Since I was a little girl, I wanted to become a teacher. I played school everyday after school! Along the way, I made some decisions in my life that turned my future in a different path. I was married and had my first son, Adrian, when I was 16 years old. I didn't finish high school and instead got my GED. I didn't believe I would have the opportunity to go to college. I believed it was not in my future. One day, my loving mom told me I needed to study to give my children a good future, and she said she would help me by taking care of them while I went to class. I was so happy because I love learning and school! I started at Houston Community College, and I remember saying, I will go as long as I can. Peter and my mom stuck by me and helped me. Then the day came for me to transfer to a 4 year university. My big sister had graduated from HBU, and she encouraged me to apply. I held on to that application for a while because I believed I wouldn't be able to make it. It would be harder than HCC, and I wondered how could a high school dropout with small children be able to make it at such a school? One afternoon, my sister came to my house, unpacked the old typewriter and asked me, "Why do you want to become a teacher?" As I shared with her my desires of making an extraordinary impact in the lives of children, she started to type my words on the college essay part of my application. A few weeks later, I got my acceptance letter. I couldn't believe it; although, I was also scared to death. My college days were unlike most with a family to care for, but it was part of my journey which I will always remember and be grateful for.
I am very thankful that I had people who believed in me and didn't give up on me. It helped me not give up on myself. I am sure you had people like that as well who encouraged you along the way. :)
Our district and school vision includes preparing every child for higher education of some type. It is so important to me because my life could have turned out a different way if it weren't for family, friends and teachers who encouraged and believed in me. Thank you for modeling the importance of higher education to our students not only this week but everyday. We have the influence to instill in our students the belief that they can graduate from high school and continue studying for a career, too, no matter what the odds might be. :) Thank you for making T-2-4 a possibility for every child!
