Animal Research

By Trudie and Haley

Postives

  • Cancer Treatment Testing.

  • Reduce the percentage of Birth Defects since 1992.

  • Reduces death rates and the possibility of disabilities after having a stroke.

  • Cures for STDs can be tested on animals.

  • Quick or long acting insulin.

  • Islet transplantation for type 1 diabetes.

  • New drugs to regulate type 2 diabetes.

  • Stem Cell Therapy tested on mouse models of Parkinson's disease.

  • Test vaccines against biological agents.

Negative

  • Implanting electrodes into the brain.

  • Long-term social isolation.

  • Withholding of food and water.

  • Repeated breeding and separating of infants from mothers.

  • Most animals die before the end of the study.

  • Animals used in chronic toxicity receive the test substance daily & seven days a week, for up to two years with no recovery time or periods

  • They sometimes use restraining devices.

  • The animals spend their live in cages.

  • Most don’t experience fresh air.

  • Become stressed.

Misconception

  • Microdosing(study of how very small doses of medicine behave in human volunteers) can replace animal safety tests.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging can now be used on humans to get the same level of information as invasive studies of brain cells in animals.

  • Systematic reviews like those reported in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) demonstrate that animal studies are meaningless for human health.

  • The clinical trial tragedy at Northwick Park hospital in the UK shows that animal tests don't work.

  • The side-effects and subsequent withdrawal of the arthritis treatment Vioxx was due to animal tests.

Abuse and Cruelty

  • Electric shocks.
  • Blindness.

  • Severe suffering.

  • Poisoning for toxicity testing.
  • Burning skin.
  • Causes brain damage to most animals.

If practice stopped...

Without animal research, we would be very unlikely to achieve many significant advances in scientific understanding or the prevention and treatment of diseases. Also, the use of animals in safety testing to protect people, animals and the environment is necessary.
