Message from the Principal
Beach Families,
As we approach a potential strike date, I want to emphasize how much Beach values and cares for our teachers. We are a community of dedicated, compassionate, and extraordinary staff. Our teachers are ensuring each and every day remains purposeful from bell to bell and centered in a positive classroom experience while they navigate a great deal of uncertainty.
I hope that resolution comes quickly as having our building full of laughter, joy and the discovery of learning is what makes our school complete.
Kelli
Remote Learning Materials and Expectations
- The District will continue to support limited services and has provided some remote learning materials such as this Family Resources webpage and this Resources to Support Learning webpage to support our students and their families.
- There are no required learning activities and all materials are to be used in a frequency and duration that best meets the needs and priorities for what you want your student to be do during this period of time.
- Learning resources will not be unique to your students specific class and an expectation from their teacher. Please do not contact teachers about assignments/resources as they are not in a position to be able to respond to such requests or generate additional practice materials.
- If you requested a school provided device for your student(s), these will be sent home on Tuesday, October 31st.
- Classroom teachers are providing all students with a QR Code that can be scanned to access their school technology/resources in one place. These will be sent home on Tuesday, October 31st.
Nutrition Services
PPS will provide grab and go meals for free for all kids, ages 1-18, and all current PPS students in the event of strike. Families may come to the closest neighborhood school that is serving meals.
Beach is a designated location for meal pick up as well as services at available locations.
Meals will be available Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursday between 11:30am-1:00pm. Meal service would begin on Wednesday, November 1st.
Message from Beach Community Union (BCU)
Information from the Beach Community Union Option 2 (if we can’t include teacher support in main email)
The BCU is here to support families and teachers during a potential strike. If you need or can offer support, or know of community based resources- please add them to our community care sheet here (and check it out for some great resources!). The district's webpage for strike resources is here and the teachers union has an FAQ for parents here. If you are interested in supporting Beach teachers during the strike please reach out to advocacy co chair Kate Lefco at katek21@gmail.com for more details.
BCU Student Directory
If you're hoping to build relationships in the Beach community and stay in touch with classmates, we have an easy solution: the School Directory! Here's how to use it:
- Log-in at beachpta.org
- If you can't remember your password and don't want to go through the "forgot password" prompt, please email beachcommunityunion@gmail.com and we can help!
- Once you're logged in, click on "Directory" in the header. At the beginning of each school year, families need to confirm directory preferences
- In the Directory, you can search for a parent, guardian, or student's name or search by class or by grade
- The Directory currently lists all active students (that we know of!) so if you don't see yourself and want to be added, this is the best way to get involved!
- If you are in the Directory and would like to be removed, please email us at beachcommunityunion@gmail.com and we will remove you promptly.
Family/Student Resources
Food Pantry services will be relocated from PPS schools during the strike. Students and families can find alternate Food Pantry locations on the Oregon Food Bank (OFB) Finder: https://foodfinder.oregonfoodbank.org/. This site identifies the current available food pick up locations offered by the OFB and will be updated as new locations are identified.
Currently students can access Portland Parks & Recreation programs at a discount through their Access Pass program. Check out portland.gov/parks/discount for more information. Students may also use the TeenForce Pass which provides youth, ages 10-20 years old, FREE access to designated activities at Charles Jordan, East Portland, Matt Dishman, Montavilla, and Mt. Scott Community Centers.
As for student enrichment activities, community organizations that provide enrichment activities for students in their own spaces (not in a PPS facility) will continue to provide these services to their current participants. In the meantime, the PPS team is working diligently to locate alternate spaces through Portland Parks & Rec and other agencies to create alternative spaces of services for school partners that do not have their own spaces. We will share updates as we have confirmation of which enrichment activities are able to continue outside of PPS facilities.
Message from YMCA
Hello Beach Families,
With the impending strike, the YMCA has been working hard to find alternative ways to serve our families. While we will not be allowed in district buildings during the time of the strike, we will be able to provide care at two of our offsite locations. Space will be limited at these locations, and registrations will be first come first serve.
Please note, this care will only be provided during the time of the PPS Teachers' Strike. We have built out weekly registrations through Thanksgiving at this time, but this is no indication of how long the strike will last. We will adjust, cancel, or extend our programs in accordance with information we receive from the district. We receive the information at the same time as parents and have no additional insight.
Hours:
7:30am-5:30pm
Locations:
Moda Tower
601 SW 2nd Ave.
Portland OR 97204
Southeast Family YMCA (SE Center CDC)
6036 SE Foster Rd.
Portland, OR 97206
How to Register:
Registration will open TOMORROW 10/25/2023 at 7:00am.
You should automatically receive a registration confirmation email with more details about the program including what to bring, parking, and entrance information. If you do not receive this email, please email central@ymcacw.org and we will forward over the information.
