What is Leukemia?
Leukemia is cancer of the blood cells. It starts in the bone marrow, the soft tissue inside most bones. Bone marrow is where blood cells are made.
If you have Leukemia...
Your bone marrow, instead of producing normal white blood cells, produces abnormal "lukemia cells"
Symptoms
Leukemia cells.
Normal white blood cells are much smaller. Leukemia also causes white blood cell numbers to go up and other blood cell numbers to go down.
Visible symptoms.
- Feeling very tired.
- Loosing weight.
- Swollen stomach
- Fever / sweats.
- Bruising easily.
Hidden symptoms.
- Bone or joint pain.
- Getting many infections.
- Swollen lymph nodes.
Who is at risk of getting Leukemia?
People exposed to large amounts of radiation.
People exposed to certain chemicals frequently.
People that have down syndrome
People that smoke or have smoked.
What can you do to prevent Leukemia?
There is no known way to prevent most types of Leukemia. Most people with Leukemia have no known risk factors.
