What is narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a condition characterized by an extreme tendency to fall asleep whenever in relaxing surroundings.
Diagnoses
Narcolepsy is diagnosed through a number of tests including the Epworth sleepiness scale test and a Polysomnogram and a multiple sleep latency test.Two weeks before the tests the person is supposed to make a sleep journal.
Treatment
Stimulant medication that increases levels of day time alertness.Also the doctors might prescribe antidepressants to help treat some of the symptoms of narcolepsy.Doctors also recommend taking naps through out the day.
Signs and Symptoms
If you have narcolepsy you may experience dream like visions,momentary paralysis and feeling sleepy or drowsy.The symptoms have are likely to happen when feeling a strong emotion.
Target population
One in every 2,000 people has narcolepsy.
About 200,000 Americans have narcolepsy and about 3,000,000 people have narcolepsy world wide.
Only around 25%of people that have narcolepsy have been diagnosed.
