What We Are Learning This Week
Language Arts/Reading/Writing: We will be continuing our unit on Expository Texts/Research. Last week we chose an animal for our research and begin to research and gather facts about what the animal eats, where it lives, what it does, it's life cycle and any other interesting facts. This week we will begin taking the facts we have learned and drafting our research paper. In this unit for we will be reviewing questioning, main idea, and details. Students will continue to ask relevant questions, seek clarification, locate facts and details, and retell important facts. They will be practice using text features (e.g. table of contents, illustrations, etc.) to locate specific information in the text.
May 1st-Final I-Station Assessment
Social Studies-We will be integrating Social Studies Skills into our Financial Literacy Unit. We will learn how families meet their basic needs in different ways, and how work provides opportunities for people to earn income to obtain their wants and needs. Also we will learn how people exchange goods and services to provide their wants and needs.
Spelling/Words Their Way:
We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Monday. The words for List 31 are again, boy, get, never, two . We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words.
Math:We will be starting our final unit in Math: Personal Financial Literacy. Students will be learning to understand that value of money and how understanding our choices with money can help us in everyday life. Students will be developing and deepening their understanding of income, earning, spending and saving, wants and needs, goods and services and charitable giving. During this unit students will have an opportunity to earn money each day for coming to school, completing class work and homework and following classroom rules and procedures. At the end of the unit students we will have a movie day where students can use their earned income to purchase a ticket to the movie, as well as popcorn and juice. Each week students will also have an opportunity to spend their money at the store that will be open at the end of each week. This is where we could use your help. If you have any fun toys or items that you would like to donate for your child's class store we would greatly appreciate it.
Science: This week we will begin our final unit on Environmental Interactions. In this unit we will be investigating how plants and animals depend on each other and their habitat. We will also explore how energy flows through a food chain. We will learn the importance of knowing the interdependence of organisms within a habitat.

Yes, the whole day will be outside. There are bugs-mosquitoes and ticks that enjoy living hosts. If you feel the need to have our child with sprayed with insect repellent or sunblock -you will have to do so before you send them to school. Teachers are NOT allowed to apply either bug spray or sunblock to your child. You can go to big box stores and get bug bands instead of sprays. Please if you do so, place around your child's ankle over the socks. If it is on their wrists they more likely to play or chew on it.
Yes, there are bathrooms there and they do have running portable water. We will make sure that students have taken care of personal business before heading out on the trails. We prefer if the classes stay together as a group. Students will not be able to leave the group at any time without an adult. They maybe told no they can't go to the bathroom right now and they may have to wait.
We will have learning goals and short lessons to complete during the field trip. Sadly enough it is not a picnic or blind romp through the woods. Chaperones maybe asked to carry lesson bag and/or lead some scripted lessons on the following topics: Animal Tracks,Beavers,Forest Floor Critters,Interesting Insects,Not Natural Objects Hike, Sorting Soil, Spider Web, Trees are Plants, River Model/Watershed, and Woods Walk.
The main idea of our trip is to show children how we impact the environment and how we can be good stewards of the planet we live on. We leave only footprints and take only memories.
