Principal's Letter
Dear Thornhill Families,
Hope everyone is having a great spring. Last week Thornhill received further recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School from the California Department of Education. I received the California Schools Recognition Program plaque in Santa Clara form State Superintendent Tom Tolarkson and County Superintendent Karen Munroe. It is in the case in the lobby for those that are interested.
Carnival--What a fun carnival this weekend. It was wonderful seeing our community enjoying the good weather and just having some fun!
Read-A-Thon! Thank you all for your donations and getting our kids reading even more. As promised, I said if we reached our goal of $25,000 I would have blue hair...
Have a great weekend,
Mr. Daubenspeck
Library News
The Read-A-Thon was a success thanks to you!
We reached our fundraising goal of $25,000! We hope you all enjoyed Mr. Daubenspeck’s Thunderbird-blue hair!
Ms. Holman’s class raised the most money so they will celebrate with the ice cream party! Ms. Gustafson’s class earned the most reading minutes and they enjoyed the pizza party! Our top three read-a-thon earners deserve mention: Emanuel Novak-Hartsock in Ms. Holman’s class, Elizar Melvin in Ms. Watson’s class, and Kailyn Gibson in Ms. Gustafson’s class. Thanks again for a very successful Read-a-thon Thunderbirds!
Librarian for the Day
I was lucky enough to have two junior librarians helping me this week. Fourth-graders Ava Lee and Claire Fung won my auction offering of Librarian for the Day! They did a great job!
It was so much fun having them help in the library and discussing great books over lunch. Thanks to the Lee and Fung families for bidding on this auction item and supporting our school!
Happy Reading,
Maura Hennessy
Librarian
PFC Meeting and Information
The final PFC board meeting of the school year is coming up.
The meeting will be on Monday, May 15 at 6 p.m. in the school library. We are having the meeting on Monday to accommodate our treasurer's schedule, so that he can be at the meeting and help explain the budget for next year.
Please let us know if you need childcare (current Thornhill students only) that evening.
Also...
As required by Article V of the Thornhill PFC Bylaws, the PFC Board is alerting the Thornhill community that a vote to amend several terms of elected office (for PFC Executive Board Members) will take place at our meeting on Monday.
The proposed amendments are as follows:
-Members of the same household may not serve on the Executive Board at the same time
-While two-year terms are encouraged, a third year is acceptable, as long as the position is shared by two people
Any questions can be directed to co-Presidents, Shauna Fithian and Shanyn Lloyd-Gibson at president@thornhillschool.org

Spring Concerts Next Week...
It's concert time!
The TK- 2 music students and 3rd grade violin students have been doing a wonderful job preparing for the TK-3 Spring Music Performance. It is going to be a wonderful celebration of music. They have learned many songs including songs by Beethoven, Rogers and Hammerstein, Suzuki, and a few others. The Performance will be Wednesday, May 17 at 9 a.m. in the auditorium.
We look forward to seeing all of you there. If there are a few parents that can help set up chairs before and after the performance, that would be greatly appreciated.
And please don't forget the 4th and 5th -grade spring concert program, which will take place May 18 at 9 a.m. See you there!
Sincerely,
Mr. Andai- K-3 Music Teacher
Dads Club News
Dads Club was once again happy to be included in the annual Spring Carnival. Our awesome volunteers were busy from set up to break down and there were lots of customers to made it a fun and successful event. Sorry we ran out of food!
We would like to thank the following dads for their skills, hard work, and great energy: Benoit Bruneau, Bruce Cowles, Carl Holmes, Derek McDonald, Doug Smith, Joe Schnell, Mark Lecker, Rex Crum, Rudy Gonzalez, Sean Parkin, Stephen Shotts, Thomas Vaquerano, Tony Jurado, …and if we forgot anybody, you know who you are!
Carnival BBQ Chair Brice Gamble sends a big shout-out of thanks to the outgoing Dads Club President Mike Teeling. Mike’s playbook and guidance helped him run the event for the first time. Mike, thanks for laying the foundation for all future Thornhill BBQs!
Dads Club also ran a very successful e-waste collection drive at the school from April 17-22 in association with TDR Electronic Recycling. In all, nearly 1730 pounds of obsolete gadgets and busted doo-dads were collected! (It’s all very technical.)
Big Thanks to every family that participated. That’s almost a ton of electronics that won’t end up in a landfill, and this Dads Club service project was a perfect way for Thornhill to celebrate Earth Day 2017.
Thornhill Dine Out at Seawolf Public House
Don’t Miss the Upcoming Thornhill Dine Out!
Our first couple Dine Outs in partnership with BigPie have been very successful, raising over $850.00 for critical programs at our school!!! We are partnering once again with BigPie, this time at Seawolf Public House (402 Webster Street, Oakland, CA 94607). A new, great, low-key restaurant, Seawolf prides itself on good food, good drinks, and it’s connection to both the history of Oakland and modern community. And one of its
owners is a Thornhill Parent!
Bring your families for dinner or have a date night on Wednesday, May 24. Seawolf will donate 10 percent of your bill back to Thornhill!
If you are not yet registered for the BigPie service, you will need to complete your free registration before the event.
When you arrive, tell your server you are a Thornhill parent. They will bring you a card on which to write your email and receipt total and that’s it! At the end of the night, the purchases will get logged and 10 percent will be given back to our school.
Please sign up early and come out to support Thornhilll!
