Greetings from the High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) Office!
As many students get ready to fill out college, job, and financial aid applications, we felt that the focus of October's newsletter should be on the résumé and financial aid awareness. This topic not only assists students with their applications for post high school plans, these are both important elements of students' HSBP portfolio.

Your High School & Beyond Plan must include a completed résumé by the end of Grade 12. You will usually need one if you are applying for a job, an internship, a scholarship, and one might even be needed for a college application. A résumé is a good way to introduce yourself; it summarizes who you are including, but not limited to your experience, what you can do, and your unique skills, talents, and leadership and/or athletic abilities.
You may use the résumé builder provided in the HSBP Portfolio system to build your résumé or upload a résumé, that includes all the required résumé sections, into your HSBP portfolio.

The required sections of the HSBP résumé are:
- Personal Details
- Skills and Qualifications
- Work and/or Volunteer Experience
- Education Experience
- Activities Experience
Students can use the step-by-step directions posted in the Schoology Résumé Resource Folder to build their résumé. Make sure to click on the "resumes" drop down tab and select "Print Resume" to download a copy for yourself.
Seniors: set a goal to finish updating your résumé by October 31st.

Federal and State Financial Aid Programs
As part of a HSBP portfolio, there must be evidence that the student has received information on federal and state financial aid programs. Most adults change career paths multiple times during their working years, therefore it is important to understand what financial resources are available for when/if you choose to pursue further education and/or training through an apprenticeship or a 2- or 4-year college or technical/specialty college.
All federal financial aid programs, most programs offered by the State of Washington, and many programs offered by colleges require you to complete and submit the FAFSA. If you do not have a Social Security Number, you should complete the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) instead of the FAFSA to be considered for Washington State aid. You should aim to complete the FAFSA or WASFA as close to October 1st as possible because financial aid dollars are limited and often are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
There is financial assistance for all different types of programs, but to qualify for financial aid, you must apply!

Just a Reminder of the Required Elements of your HSBP!
- Identification of students' career goals using career interest inventories.
- Identification of students' educational goals.
- A four-year course plan with an individualized personalized pathway that fulfills graduation requirements and aligns with students' career and educational goals, with information about academic acceleration (RCW 28A.320.195), dual credit courses, Career and Technical Education programs, and graduation pathway options.
- By the end of 12th grade, a current résumé.
- If students have not met standard on their state assessment (Smarter Balanced Assessment), this plan must include interventions and academic supports, additional courses, or both that will enable the student to meet the high school graduation requirements.
- Identification of students' "Pathway to Graduation" and "Post Secondary Plan"
- Evidence that student has received information on federal and state financial aid programs.
