Springville Families,

We are incredibly grateful for the work that you are doing at home to support your children during CDL. We are aware of the challenges that this situation presents for parents and students. While this is not optimal, we appreciate how everyone is making the best of the situation. Teachers are working tremendously hard, students are engaging with learning and parents are giving so much.

Our teachers are working hard to engage students in thoughtful, rigorous work, hold them to high expectations and provide just enough support so that they can complete tasks independently. There is a sweet spot between offering too much help and not enough help or support. As teachers, we have come to learn that when we step in to help at the first sign of struggle for a child, rather than giving them time and space to work through the challenge on their own, we tend to limit an important process of learning. In order for students to truly become independent, confident learners they need to believe in themselves and their ability to persist through challenges they encounter. We call this "productive struggle". Productive struggle develops perseverance, which is a Springville character trait we work hard to develop.

We certainly do not want children to get a point where they feel frustrated and give up, but we do want them to have the experience of working through challenging tasks on their own or with a peer. When students themselves make meaning, ask questions for understanding and see that their hard work results in success, they not only feel better about themselves, their learning tends to "stick". If the work is too easy or we support them too much, they may get the “right answer”, but their sense of self and the quality of the learning is not as strong.

This is part of our ongoing work, whether in person or online. We invite you into this learning with us. If you see your child struggling, here are somethings you can do to help:

  • Ask leading questions to guide their thinking.

  • Instead of asking what they don’t understand, ask them what they do understand about the task

  • Have them step away from the task and come back to it to give them time to wrestle with the work

  • Encourage your child to see mistakes as opportunities to learn

  • Praise them for their persistence

We are so proud of teachers and students and all they have accomplished this fall. We have all been engaged in our own “productive struggle”. As always, do not hesitate to reach out with questions, concerns or tips for how we can help you support your child at home.

November 13th Information

Friday, November 13th is an assessment and grading day for teachers and there is no school for students. Teachers will be working on tasks such as scoring assessments, providing feedback on Seesaw or Canvas, and planning and/or reviewing CDL resources. Though teachers will not be holding parent/teacher conferences this fall or sending home report cards until January, teachers are working to provide ongoing communication about progress.

Following the 13th, parents of students in grades 6-8 will be able to see their student's current standing on learning targets that have been assessed this fall by logging into ParentVUE. For assistance logging into ParentVUE, please click on the following link: ParentVUE Information.


OBOB is back! It might look a little different this year but we are excited to be able to participate in it this year. We will be having an information session for all parents and kids interesting in participating or finding out more about OBOB on Wednesday, November 18th at 11am and 7pm. We will be sending out the zoom link prior to the meeting so look for that. Anyone in grades 3-8 is inviting to participate in OBOB this year. Please look at the OBOB Book list and start reading! Battles will start after Winter Break.

Ms. B's Book Talk

This week, I recommend Who Stole The Wizard of Oz by Avi. This is an enjoyable fast paced mystery!

Someone has stolen a rare edition of the Wizard of Oz, along with other children’s classics from the library. Join the fun as twins Toby and Becky embark on an adventure to find the thief and discover a treasure using clues hidden in these books.

Classroom Book Pick-Up

We are so happy many of you are able to pick-up books for your children at school. The Classroom Book Bag Wednesday pick-up moved indoors last week and parents were able to walk up to the staff doors to return and request a book bag.

We are expanding our service to include 2nd grade EVERY WEEK. So, starting on Wednesday, Oct. 28th, Kindergarten 1st and 2nd can come every week for fresh books if you need them. Please don't forget to count the number of books you are returning and make sure it matches what it says on the bag. We are trying hard to make sure your child gets different books each week that are matched closely to their reading level.

Here is the Classroom Book Bag Pick-up Schedule for the next several weeks:

Congratulations, Moon Scientists!

Congratulations to Springville 4th graders: Aarnav, Vanshika, Ruthvik and Vijval! These students participated in NASA's Lunar Loo Global Challenge which got nearly 900 submissions from across the world. Their team, Moon Scientists, was one of the winners in the Junior category (the only team from the USA!) for their project, The Lavabo Throne.

Nurse News!

EAT, SLEEP, MOVE! News from our nurse, Sydney Garl!

Healthy habits and routines are important to manage and improve both mental and physical wellness, even when students are participating in distance learning. Healthy eating, sleeping and exercise are linked with improvements in behavior, attention, mood, safety, school performance and attendance, and boosting immune systems. Here are a few tips:


  • Try to make half the plate fruits and vegetables
  • Limit sugary drinks. Did you know that in 12 ounces of soda, there are about 40 grams of sugar? That is 10 teaspoons of sugar in just one can!
  • Focus on eating more fresh foods and less packaged foods.
  • Occasional sweets are fine, but try not to make dessert a reward
  • Let kids stop eating when they feel they’ve had enough

  • According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, to promote optimal health:
  • Children 3-5 years old should sleep 10-13 hours per 24 hours
  • Children 6-12 years old should sleep 9-12 hours
  • Teenagers 13-18 years old should sleep 8-10 hours
  • Set bed and wake-up times at the same time every day
  • Have a bedtime routine
  • Remove electronics from the bedroom, keep it quiet, and at a comfortable temperature
  • Avoid large meals and caffeine before bed time

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommend children and adolescents ages 6-17 do 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. Make moving together a regular part of your family life. Walk the dog, have a dance party, do fitness activities during commercials, clean the house or yard together, and take the stairs!

TAG/Summa Testing

TAG Testing

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, the BSD TAG testing process will look different this year. Teachers will spend this Fall/Winter collecting evidence on how students respond to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. School TAG facilitators will collect nominations from teachers and parents this Fall/Winter and along with collected evidence, decisions will be made on which students will be selected to test in person after March, 2021.

  • CogAT

    • The CogAT Screener will not be administered to all 3rd & 5th grade students this year.

    • Grade 5 students will be invited to take the CogAT Full Version at designated test sites on December 2 or December 9. Scores can be used for both TAG/Summa. Invitations for testing will be emailed from the District mid November.

    • A school TAG committee will determine which K-3 students take the CogAT, based on nominations and collected evidence. Testing will occur after March, 2021.

  • Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS: Reading and/or Math) - TBD

    • A committee will convene to look at achievement testing during CDL and recommendations will be made for the testing process.


  • Summa Testing and Eligibility

    • Scores from the 3rd grade CogAT Full Version will be used for Summa eligibility. This is a change from last year.

    • Scores from 4th grade ITBS Reading and Math tests will be used for Summa eligibility.

    • Students will be notified in early November of their eligibility. Students who are eligible do not require further testing.

    • All Grade 5 students will be invited to take the CogAT Full Version at a designated test site on December 2 or December 9. Invitations to all 5th graders will be emailed from the District in mid November.

    • The process for reading and math achievement is currently under review. Updates will be posted once decisions have been made.

  • Summa and Learning Options

    • There will be no Summa applications this year. Eligible students will be notified and asked to electronically confirm or decline a Summa position during January 27-February 3, 2021.

    • Students may apply for one Learning Option in addition to being eligible for Summa.

    • Students who are selected through the Options Lottery or from Second Consideration AND are eligible for Summa will need to make a choice by February 3, 2021.

District Option School Process for 2021-2022

Option school applications for the 2021-2022 school year opened this week.

  • Current BSD students may apply online using their student ID.
  • All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries.
  • Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school (i.e. homeschool or private school students) will need to complete a paper application available online or at any school office.
  • Applicants who don’t have internet access may complete a paper application.
  • Students may only select one option on their applications.
  • Please give careful consideration to your choice of school. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed.
  • Raleigh Hills and Springville will only be accepting applications for 7th and 8th grades.

Applications must be received no later than December 11 at 4:00 p.m. Important dates, deadlines and answers to frequently asked questions can be found on the Learning Options webpage.

Child Care Subsidy Available

Washington County has secured a grant through the federal CARES Act to provide child care subsidies to parents/guardians. The Beaverton School District will be distributing approximately $2.4 million to families who are eligible and apply for these subsidies. In other words, if you pay for child care, you could be eligible to receive money to help cover some or all of your out-of-pocket expenses.

The District opened the application window on October 28, 2020. If you don't have internet access, you can pick up a paper application at your school or the District Office (16550 SW Merlo Drive, Beaverton). If you have questions, email child-care-subsidy@beaverton.k12.or.us.

As you prepare to apply, we suggest that you gather the required information to include with your application. The funds will be distributed until they are gone. It is in your best interest to apply earlier.

Grab & Go Meal Service

The start of school is right around the corner, and our Nutrition Services department has been hard at work developing a plan for providing meals during Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL). We have just received waivers from the USDA which allow any child (age 1-18) to pick up free meals through December 31, 2020.

Here’s a look at how meals will be distributed this fall:

  • Parents or guardians may pick up meals for students who are not present.

  • Meal pickups will occur two days per week: Tuesday (2 days of food) and Thursday (3 days of food) from 11 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

  • Meals will be packaged with breakfast and lunch together.

  • Masks must be worn by anyone picking up meals.

2020-2021 District Calendar

The 2020-21 District Calendar has been updated.

The calendar is subject to change based on contract negotiations and resource availability. In the event inclement weather or other emergency closures prevent the District from meeting required instructional hours set by ODE, the days will be made up in June.
