Wauwatosa Montessori School
May 13, 2022
Dear Families:
The warm weather this week certainly had our students feeling as though summer is here. As I stated in my email on Tuesday, students' energy and excitement for this weather was understandably quite high. With that said, we still expect all students to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. Classroom teachers are continuously teaching and reviewing these expectations with students, however I ask families to do so with your child(ren) as well. A united message between school and home goes a long way! With a month of school left, we have a number of field trips, end of the year events, etc and it's important that everyone is clear that the expectations do not change so we can enjoy these activities and keep the learning going in a safe and productive manner.
Speaking of fun events, we have two via PTSA coming up with Family Fun Night on May 20th and the MicroMarathon on Field Day on June 7th. Please see the PTSA portion of the newsletter for more information.
The cast of Whitman Middle School & Montessori's Shrek Jr. have two performance this weekend. If you're interested in seeing the full musical, their performances are all at Wauwatosa West High School on:
Friday May 13 @ 7pm
Saturday May 14 @ 2pm
As always, please reach out with any questions!
Sincerely,
Ms.Imperiale
Principal

Snapshots from the Week
Lion's Club Donations
Do you have an old pair (or many pairs of glasses) just laying around. Do you know someone who has an extra hearing aid they no longer use?
The Berghammer Family will be collecting old glasses and hearing aids to donate to the Lion's Club of Wisconsin. The Lions Club is a national service organization with many local chapters. The Lion's Club of Wisconsin has a club in Wauwatosa. They sponsor the Wisconsin Lion's Camp, which provides week-long camping for children with vision impairment, hearing loss, autism and many other situations. Many of you know that Elleanor was born deaf and uses cochlear implants. She has attended the Lions camp most summers since she was 6 years old. She (and our family) wanted to give back to the Lion's cause by collecting glasses and hearing aid for them to repurpose to people in need.
We will post a bin the entry area, where they could be dropped. If you have questions, you can contact Adam Berghammer (ammer1029@yahoo.com or 414-467-2736)
Volunteers Needed
All Tosa West juniors enrolled in the required Social Studies class American Public Policy will be presenting their research on public policy issues at West on THURSDAY, JUNE 2ND from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm. This is a required component of the class.
The Issue Fair is a GREAT way for parents of elementary or middle school students to authentically interact with high school students and to learn more about Tosa West and our curriculum.
We need at least 70 community adult evaluators to help assess and engage students in thinking about these important civic ideas. Each adult spends 10 minutes talking individually with 1 student and completes a simple evaluation rubric. Adults will talk to 10 students during the two hour event.
If you are interested, please complete the following sign-up sheet 2022 ISSUE FAIR SIGN UP or email Tosa West Social Studies teacher Chris Lazarski at lazarsch@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us

The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete per child. All data collected through this survey will be shared anonymously with district leadership. Please complete one survey for each student in your household no later than 5 pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.
Click here to access the survey.
On May 12, students in grades 4-12 received a link to a survey that asks questions related to their classes, teacher(s), friends, available support and their school in general. This survey is completely optional and will have no impact on your child’s/children’s grade(s). If you completed the opt-out form, your child did not receive the survey.
NEW: Gifted and Advanced Focus Groups
Thank you to parents, guardians and caregivers for your engagement in the Gifted and Advanced Learning surveys. A significant number of individuals without a child identified as Gifted/Advanced indicated they would be attending the focus group discussion scheduled for May 19, 2022 at Wauwatosa West High School in the Steiner Center. In order for the focus group conversation to provide all participants the opportunity to have their ideas heard, the focus group will be split into smaller sections with the revised schedule shown below. Please plan to attend the session for the child's grade level you most closely identify with.
3:30 - 4 pm Caregivers of high school students
4 - 4:30 pm Caregivers of middle school students
4:30 - 5 pm Caregivers of K-2nd grade students

SPEAK UP, SPEAK OUT (SUSO) Resource Center was created to help keep students and staff safe by offering a comprehensive, one-stop place to turn with safety concerns, including a threat reporting system. Students play a key role in keeping schools safe. The SUSO threat reporting system aims to empower students to safely and confidently voice their concerns without fear of retaliation. NEW: Strategic Planning Update
The Wauwatosa School District’s Strategic Planning Steering Committee met for the third time on Tuesday, May 10.
