Mrs. Terry's Class News

Welcome to Antarctica!

Today we officially land on the Antarctic Peninsula - the moment the kids have all been waiting for! This week we will spend time on the peninsula learning about it's geology and geography, and most importantly the last three penguins: Gentoo, Chinstrap, and the Emperor.

Kindness Matters

First grade has wrapped up their schoolwide service project - Kindness Matters. Kids were busy all week long discovering what "kind" looks like and practicing kind acts in their school community. This week the Kindergartners have their service project, creating Valentine's Day cards for senior citizens; and we will extend our kindness week by making cards with them.

Readers and Authors of Penguins

Our focus in Language Arts this week is learning about Non-Fiction text features and using twin sentences to add details to our writing. The kids have formed book groups and in these groups they are reading non fiction chapter books and learning reading strategies to get super smart about penguins.

Through writer's workshop they get a chance to be their own authors about the penguin of the day! Last week the focus was on writing for their reader - you! They imagined all the questions you would ask about penguins and tried to answer them through their writing. We will expand on that skill by using twin sentences to explain vocabulary related to penguins. For example: Penguin eggs are eaten by skua. Skua are large birds that live in the Antarctic.

Our Star Student of the Week is Olivia!
