BECS Parent Newsletter
September 2, 2022
Dear Hawk Families:
We are now finishing our third week of school and settling into the routine! We appreciate your willingness to volunteer and the support you are providing your child at home. Please continue to check in with your child each day about what they are learning, ask questions to your child’s teacher, and support your child’s success by establishing morning and evening routines. As a reminder, staff supervision begins at 8:10 AM. Children should not arrive on campus prior to 8:10 AM unless they are eating breakfast in the cafeteria.
Additionally, we understand that emergency situations can create understandable concerns from parents and families. Our priority during these times is to ensure the safety of our students and staff. As soon as we are able, information from the school administration will be sent to families regarding events. Thank you for your continued trust in us to ensure the safety of your children.
Finally, athletics are back in action! We hope to see you at one of our girls' home volleyball games! Go Hawks!

Communication During/Following Emergency Situations and Drills:
During drills and emergency situations, BECS first and top priority is the safety and security of all students and staff. Therefore, BECS will not be providing information during a drill or an emergency situation, unless it will affect student pick up or drop off. Once the safety and security of our students and staff are verified and confirmed, we will work diligently to communicate to the community that either the drill has concluded, or the details and next steps regarding the emergency situation.
Dress Code Policy:
Please ensure your child’s patch is permanently attached to their top (sew/embroidered/glue/iron-on). Safety pins are not allowed. This includes jackets/sweaters/hoodies that are approved to be worn in class. Additional Dress Code information can be found in the Parent/Student Handbook.
Dropping Items Off:
Please remember our procedure for dropping off items for your student. To assure that your students are only getting items dropped off by parents and to assure that students are not leaving the building or playground to meet up with parents, we ask that you park in the lot and bring the item to the office. Often we will have you just leave the item in the vestibule and then we will deliver it to your student. This is faster for you and maintains our security.
Families of 6th Grade Students:
If your child has PE in the first trimester, they have now been issued a PE Uniform by the teacher. The cost of the uniform is $15.75 and has been billed to your students' account. Payment should be made through the fees tab in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
Lockdown Drill Announcement and Resources:
On Monday, September 26th at approximately 2:30 pm, BECS will be conducting its first lockdown drill of the school year. BECS works to ensure physical and psychological safety for students, and part of that work includes lockdown drills. Students may experience a lockdown when there is a reported threat to safety within the school. Also, BECS will involve the Brighton Police Department to ensure that in case of an actual lockdown, Brighton PD is familiar with the layout of our school. Below, you will find a link to a document that will help you discuss this lockdown drill with your student if you so choose. We will communicate to the community when the lockdown drill has concluded.
While this lockdown drill is happening, or any other drill that BECS conducts throughout the year, parents will not be able to enter the school for any reason until the drill concludes. After the drill concludes, BECS will send communication to the community that the drill has concluded.

Middle School Restroom Breaks:
Due to some early concerns around vandalism and the number of instruction students are missing due to using the restroom, we will be adding some structure to help students determine appropriate times to leave the classroom to take care of their needs. Over the next week, teachers will be discussing with students the appropriate time to take restroom breaks. Students will be encouraged to use the restroom during their passing period and communicate with their teacher if they will be a minute or so late. In addition, students will be taught that direct instruction time is not the appropriate time to leave the classroom as it causes students to miss important information and disrupts the flow of the classes. Each class has independent or group work time, which would be a much more appropriate time for students to leave if needed. Obviously, students will not be hindered from accessing the nurse or the restroom in emergency cases, but hopefully, these structures will help students to focus during critical times of instruction while also ensuring their needs are being met.
Pastries with the Principals:
We really enjoyed meeting and talking with some parents during our 1st monthly meeting last week. Here are some topics we discussed:
We discussed feedback we received from last year’s survey and some specific actions we have taken or will be taking to address the feedback we received.
We covered volunteering, Elementary specials schedules, our new literacy, and math coaching program, adding a counselor this year, and safety upgrades.
We also spent time on open Q&A. Some topics covered here are related to communication, staffing, and devices.
Back to School Nights - we offered times for groups of families to come this year but will communicate better in the future that if a family’s assigned time doesn’t work, that they are welcome to come at the time that does.
Remember our next meeting is Sept. 30th from 8:45 to 9:45. Watch for the RSVP in future communications. We will be discussing the information requested during our last meeting.
Picture Retakes & Class Photos are coming:
September 16th will be class photos and picture retakes.
Students retaking pictures will be allowed to wear modified dress for their pictures only. Then they will need to change into their uniform. Retakes will be held first thing in the morning. Class pictures will follow afterward.
