Room 204 News #17

March 31

Look for spelling words in Monday's red folder. Last week we learned about contractions such as I'm, don't, he'll. Contractions combine two words into one by removing letters and replacing with an apostrophe. Look for contractions in your student's spelling list. Help your student be aware of contractions around you! We've found them in our poems and guided reading books.

Fact Triangles

Expanding on the idea of fact families, you now have some fact triangles to practice with at home. By covering up one of the three numbers on a fact triangle, your student can practice facts.

For example: 7, 4 and 11 are a family. The 11 is at the top of the triangle.

Students learn to identify the missing or covered number on a fact triangle and then generate these equations.

Field Trip - Real Life Farm

Look for a permission slip in the red folder. This trip is on April 21. If you would like to attend, please send me an email or write a note on the permission slip.

March is Reading Month!

March has been so much fun - special events, lots of great stories, tons of reading, and costumes on Friday! Watch for pictures of our Mystery Readers coming soon.

Showing, not Telling

Ask your student, what are you working on in Writing Workshop? We have been learning ways that writers revise their work (make changes to improve the story). Writers add missing words, dialogue, and details. Sometimes we take things out that don't make sense. This week students tried "showing, not telling." Instead of saying "I was sad," a writer might say "I walked slowly with my head down, dragging my feet."

Parent Input Form due by April 4

The green parent input form is a great way to share information about your child that helps with his/her classroom placement next year.
