Physical/Mental Impacts of Down Syndrome
Down Syndrome occurs due to a trisomy on the 21 chromosome. A trisomy is when there is an extra chromosome present. Having Down Syndrome can result in low muscle tone and a tendency to keep there mouth open with their tongue hanging out. Individuals with Down Syndrome may also have dysplastic ears, a narrow roof of their mouth, and vertical skin folds covering their inner eye corner. Also, they could have poor coordination, intellectual disabilities, and hearing impairments.
How to Treat Individuals with Down Syndrome
People who have Down Syndrome may be too trusting or friendly and often become instantly attached to others. It is important to treat an individual with Down Syndrome the same as you would treat anyone else. When interaction with someone who has Down Syndrome, you must put the person before the condition. Also, don't refer to people with this condition as if they aren't humans or "normal". During communication refer to the individual by using their name, just as you would with a friend.
