Principal's Message

When I think about all of the things that our students learn at MMES, I have to say that character education is near or at the the top of the list for me. We kicked off our "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser last week to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We talked with the student body about how meaningful it is when students earn the money that they donate by doing chores, etc. Two of our students took this to the next level last weekend!

Although it was a very cold Sunday morning, two of our finest fifth graders set up shop outside the post office with a donation table and a variety of "Thank You" gifts. The girls decided that it would feel better to them if they gave thank you gifts for the donations instead of selling items. The gifts ranged from baked goods and homemade bracelets to other unique crafts that they made. After two hours, they had raised $84 for the cause.

Hearing stories like this are so inspiring because I know that the strong partnership that exists between our staff, students, and parents is developing citizens who will make our future world a better place. Great job everyone!

Have a great weekend!

Donate a Quarter and Save a Life

Our school is currently taking part in a program called "Pennies for Patients." We have been a part of this program for the past three years. You may have heard about it before, it’s a fundraiser for children with blood cancer, like Leukemia and Lymphoma. At our recent school assembly, Mrs. Kim Tatro came to visit and explained what blood cancer is. Students in our school will be bringing home little boxes that they fill with change. You don’t need to donate that much, just a few dollars. Then the boxes come back to school and the change is placed into a bigger box in the classroom. On Friday April 10, all the money is collected and added up, the classroom with the most money wins a mystery prize! If we meet the school goal of $4,000, (last year we got to around 3,000) some of the teachers will hula hoop at the next school wide meeting! The money directly aids in the development of medicine and therapy for blood cancer. Please, donate to this cause. Every cent helps!

Bikes, Scooters, Skateboards, Hoverboards, etc.

With the warm weather upon us, we are excited to see the bike racks filling up and many students walking to school. A couple of reminders from the handbook that would be helpful if you shared with your child/children:

Bikes/scooters/skateboards/etc. must be walked while on school property for the safety of our walking students. Bikes/scooters should be secured to a bike rack with a lock. Any other "ride on" must be able to be stored in the student's locker. Students must wear helmets when riding these items.

Hoverboards/Swegways: These should not be brought to school for a number of safety reasons.

An extra set of eyes would also be helpful at the concert on May 4th 6:30– 8:00 p.m. The children will be in their warm up room prior to performing on stage and your presence in the room would be extremely helpful.
