The Curriculum Corner: Comprehension Through Conversation...our journey so far!
In the traditional classroom, the teacher typically takes the role of a banker who “deposits” knowledge and students respond to inauthentic questions by regurgitating facts. As educators, we must move beyond this in order to establish an environment that supports the development of “listening and communication skills, collaborative learning capabilities, and critical thinking.”
Some important things to consider as we develop “an environment that enables all children to grow as thinkers” include student groupings, the use of charts and picture books, multiple exposures to a specific text, and vocabulary routines. Our views on student abilities must shift from a fixed view of intelligence to a focus on reflective intelligence. As we plan, we must develop questions that promote the sharing of ideas rather than just the “right answer” with conferring and dialog playing a major role in daily instruction and assessment.
As you reflect on the first portion of our text, click on the graphic below pertaining to student engagement. How does this fit in with our dialog so far & what best practices have you established to promote this type of engagement? Feel free to share via social media, email or in the footer of the Buzz as you reflect!

News & Notes
- As we continue to streamline our AM routines, our ultimate goal is to get our students into the rooms prior to the final bell. In the past we have had students who stop in to visit with former teachers, which is a nice practice; however, this causes a delay to our morning routines (especially for those students who are still coming in late). Therefore, I am asking that students do not continue to visits with previous teachers and that they report directly to their classrooms. Thank you for your support with this initiative!
- As you complete your SGO's please print & sign before you drop them off. If we still need to meet to review tiers just let me know and we can schedule a time.
- Teachscape is not functioning correctly when accessed by Internet Explorer. Please use Chrome.
If you have picked up lending libraries please have your students write thank you cards to the Bridge of Books Foundation & give to Sonya by Wednesday.
