DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP WEEK
Oct. 18-22 is Digital Citizenship Week! Being a good digital citizen means staying safe while connected and understanding both the realities and opportunities of the digital world in which we live. Just as we teach children to be aware of how their actions can impact others in face to face communication, the same holds true for online actions. In essence, a good citizen should also be a good digital citizen.
One way to introduce your own children to these concepts is to engage in honest discussions about digital habits. Below are some “dinner time” or “commute time” discussion prompts to get the conversation started.
K-2 questions:
What are three rules you can use to stay safe when you use the internet? (Sample responses: Stick to places that are for kids, always ask a grown up first, only talk to people you know)
How do you feel when your television or computer time is over and you have to turn it off?
Grades 3-5 questions:
How can your behaviors online affect others?
How can some media choices be more or less healthy that others?

Very Important: Please label your students coats, hats, lunch boxes, water bottles etc with their names.

Event Packets were sent home last week from classroom teachers. If you have misplaced it or you did not receive one, please download this message’s attachment.
Now is the time to start reaching out to family, friends, and neighbors for donations. The easiest way to donate is Paypal or your employer’s company match program – check and cash are also accepted. Like prior years, all students will receive a FREE t-shirt*. Size estimates were made for students who did not have a size submitted.
Stay Safe,
Chris + Marianthe Tufts
*COVID-19 restricts the number of employees our vendor can have in their facility at one time. We will have a more accurate date for t-shirt distribution once soon.

OCTOBER IS FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH
Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American group in the nation. The celebration of Filipino American History Month in October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States.

Park & Walk
Park + Walk is simple: drive to a park or other safe location near school and then walk the rest of the way! Park + Walk is for families who don’t feel comfortable walking or biking the whole way to school. This may be due to distance or another hazard along the route.
Why Park + Walk to school?
-
Be part of the solution – fewer cars around schools makes it safer for everyone.
-
Reduce your carbon footprint and limit unhealthy pollutants.
-
Squeeze in some extra steps with a quick walk.
-
Save money by driving less.
Ask your school if they have a Park + Walk location, if not, contact us and we’ll help you set one up. To learn more or ask questions: bsdsaferoutes@gmail.com or www.beaverton.k12.or.us/safe-routes
