Cell Phones in Elementary School
One of our biggest priorities is student safety. We understand that many parents send cell phones with their children to ensure their safety while walking to and from school and bus stops etc... We also wish to protect our students from inappropriate cell phone use while on campus. That is why we require that cell phones remain OFF and PUT AWAY in lockers or back packs and not carried around throughout the school.
Please understand that cell phones have access to internet content which is not filtered by FWISD Wi-Fi restrictions. There have been incidents where students used their cell phones to access inappropriate and pornographic material and show it to other students while at recess and in the bathrooms (which cannot be monitored by adults). There have also been incidents where students have used cell phones to take pictures or record other students fighting or using the restroom while in the bathrooms. In order to protect our children, it is in the best interest of ALL students that cell phones NOT be allowed in bathrooms, at recess, etc....
FWISD Board Policy FNCE Regulation States:
A campus administrator will have the authority to determine the appropriate use of telecommunications or electronic devices by students on campus and while attending school-sponsored or school-related activities on or off school property, provided that such determinations are clearly communicated to students prior to enforcement. A campus administrator may choose one of the following options:0)
1. Students will be prohibited from possessing telecommunications or electronic devices while on school property or while attending school-sponsored or school-related activities on or off school property;
2. Students may possess telecommunications or electronic devices while on school property or while attending school-sponsored or school-related activities on or off school property. However, such devices must not be visible and must remain off during the instructional day; or
3. A campus administrator and campus instructors may, in the exercise of reasonable discretion, allow students to use telecommunications or electronic devices for instructional purposes during the instructional day.
A campus administrator and an instructor may, in the exercise of reasonable discretion, allow a student to use electronic devices for instructional purposes during the instructional day, so long as the use does not disturb the classroom instruction.
A campus administrator must notify the parent or guardian within two school days when a telecommunications device has been confiscated and explain how the device may be reclaimed. To reclaim a telecommunications device, a high school student, parent, or guardian shall:
1. Present in person at the campus during posted school hours written proof of ownership and a photo ID;
2. Complete a form acknowledging return of the device; and
3. Pay a $15 fee for each device.
If a personal telecommunications device is not retrieved, the District will dispose of the device after providing notice required by law.
Under all options, students will not be permitted to possess telecommunications or electronic devices on their persons during testing periods, unless specifically allowed to do so by the instructor or a school administrator, or by the student’s individualized education program (IEP) or behavioral improvement plan (BIP). Students may be required to demonstrate before test administration that no such devices are in their possession or available for their use in violation of this regulation, the Student Code of Conduct, or state or federal law.
The possession of telecommunications or electronic devices by students on school property or while attending school-sponsored or school-related events is a privilege, not a right. A campus administrator, in the exercise of reasonable discretion in response to student misbehavior, abuse of the privilege, or other reasonable cause, may deny or revoke the privilege of possessing a telecommunications or electronic device.
As a school, we have chosen option #2. This allows for students to have cell phones on campus so that parents will feel safe with their children walking to and from school and bus stops, etc... However, this option also allows us to keep our students safe from distractions and inappropriate content, by keeping devices put away and turned off while on school property.
We appreciate your support with this at home. It is imperative that parents show respect for school staff and school policies as this helps students develop a healthy respect for civil laws and authority figures as they grow up into adults and citizens of our community.
We are so proud of Maximiliano M. for being the first student to complete all levels in Lexia!
Our Greenbriar girls had a blast at the SHHS Dance Clinic!
Do you have a hobby you would be willing to share with a group of students?
Please consider volunteering to co-host an after school enrichment club for students. As a volunteer, you would partner with one or more of our staff members to sponsor a group from 3:30-4:30 pm. once a week for 6-8 weeks at a time.
Currently, we have the following enrichment groups on campus:
- Fort Worth After school Program: M-Th 3:00-5:30PM (still some spots open)
- Diamond Painting 3rd grade (full)
- Pearls With Purpose Girls Mentoring Group 3rd-5th grade (full)
- Choir: 4th-5th grade (full)
- Student Council (elected members)
- Ambassadors Boys Leadership Group (Selected students)
Since most of our current groups are full, we are looking for others who would like to start a new group. Please let us know if you would be willing to work with students and help sponsor a club here: https://forms.gle/uaiCvYxei1r8KYX1A
