MVA SPRING Virtual Clubs!
Light those fires this week by introducing your students to new ideas and concepts offered up by our amazing homeschool teachers.
There is no need to preregister your students; just show up. Make sure to check out the details regarding each club, so you know whether to gather any needed supplies. However, we have been reassured that if you do not have those supplies on hand; your student can still attend and will still be able to learn and enjoy.

International Space Station Activity Book
Life in Space: The International Space Station Lesson Plan
"The International Space Station is a unique scientific platform that enables researchers from all over the world to put their talents to work on innovative experiments in the microgravity environment, which could not be done anywhere else. Although each space station partner has distinct agency goals for station research, each partner shares a unified goal to extend the resulting knowledge for the betterment of humanity. We may not know yet what will be the most important discovery gained from the space station, but we already have some amazing breakthroughs."-NASA Johnson

MVA 20/21 Pen Pal Program
Welcome to the Mission Vista Academy Pen Pal Program!
How It Works:
This program is open to any Mission Vista Academy student. You need to sign up and be willing to commit! The students will be required to write one letter per month throughout the school year. Please be patient, especially during the holidays and breaks. Students are not required to work during these times.
Most importantly, you need to be active. This is a free program but you need to be committed. We need to be sure we aren’t letting anyone down because that’s just not nice and not fun! Can you imagine running out to your mailbox every day for a month, waiting on a letter, and then never receiving one? That’s just really sad and hurtful, so please:
Do Not Sign Up If You Cannot Commit.
Students will be put into one of four writing levels. The students will be paired with another student from that level, and ideally the same grade level. This can sometimes be a little difficult so your student may be placed with someone a grade higher or lower.
Level requirements are just general guidelines but strongly encouraged. Rules are a must. If we become aware of a failure to meet these, you may be asked to withdraw from the pen pal program.
Levels:
Level 1: Drawings Only: TK, Early Kinder, Special Needs
Level 2: Drawing/Craft and 1-5 sentences: Kinder - 2nd Graders
Level 3: 2-3 Paragraphs, Drawing/Craft Optional: 2nd - 5th Graders
Level 4: 3-5 Paragraphs, Drawing/Craft Optional: 6th - 10th Graders
Rules:
Must write one letter per month
Must address the envelope themselves (Parents can help if necessary)
Mail out the letter (Parents: teach them how to mail a letter at home and/or at the post office)
Must be appropriate and polite (Parents: please proofread before mailing)
Get creative with your letters!
Parents will receive an email with the contact info of the other parent the student has been matched up with. It will be up to you to exchange mailing addresses. Parents will be in charge of making sure their student is sticking to the program and not letting other students down. Again, please read your student’s letters to be sure they are appropriate before mailing them out!
Print out MVA Voluntary Activity Waiver HERE (you will be asked to upload a waiver when signing up for Pen Pal Program)
If your pen pal hasn’t written their monthly letter, please let us know and we will try to help!
Worst Case Scenario: We assign you a new buddy if it is possible.
Happy Homeschooling,
Audrey & Andrea

Homeschooling Teaching Tip! Note Taking Strategy - Cornell Notes
Cornell note-taking is a method of note-taking arranged in a way that allows your student to take notes in a quick and organized way. The method can be used in lecture or while reading a chapter from a textbook by writing keywords, main ideas, and summarizing what has been learned.
Some students have difficulties with recording notes during lectures or lessons such as writing fast enough to keep up with the pace, paying continued attention, making sense out of their notes after class, and deciding what was important to record during the lecture. Many of these note taking difficulties often result in notes with either partial or incomplete lecture points. Implementation of Cornell note-taking addresses all these issues by creating a note-taking style that is quick, clear, and structured.
In addition, guided notes allow for different mediums in which to teach the information, rather than hear and record. They provide a means to increase student learning and understanding of content through the use of multiple modalities; auditory, visual, and tactile (Jimenez, 2012). Students can draw pictures, fill in the blanks, write summaries of activities they engaged in or form questions they think the content is geared for answering.
How to introduce your student to a note taking technique:
1. Introduction
The first step is to introduce the new format of note taking. Introducing a visual as you explain the process to your student will help make your descriptions and explanations much more clear. Explain to your student that he/she will write key facts such as definitions, important dates, and people, formulas, etc. in the right-hand column (which is the largest space). In the left-hand column, students will create questions they think the information in the right column answers as well as, define the main idea of the lecture. The bottom section is where the student will write a summary, in their own words, of what the lecture was about.
2. Modeling
As you read the information you can discuss with the student where the main ideas, keywords, and questions should go. This will give insight to the student about the decisions that help determine how to condense the main ideas into a few sentences. As the lecture takes place, you should point out a particular sentence or a critical fact that your student should write in the prepared space.
3. Guided instruction
As you read the information you can have a think-aloud about selected keywords and paraphrase the main ideas from the first paragraph of a text. Then have your student look ahead and think-aloud about keywords and the main idea for the second paragraph.
4. Independent Practice
Once your student needs less support have them work on their own notes. For additional support, you can provide your student with the template with keywords or partially filled in notes until they are comfortable taking notes on their own.
You can provide the following visuals to your student for independent work:

Hi everyone! I am a mom of 3 awesome kids ranging in age from 12 to 8 years old. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for 18 years. Having homeschooled our children over the last 8 years in 3 different states, I've found homeschooling here in California, especially with Mission Vista Academy, has been a great fit for our homeschool journey. I am grateful for our ability to homeschool so freely and I aspire to assist other families with their own homeschool adventures!
