Pittsfield Penguin News
January 2020
Greetings and Happy New Year Pittsfield CommUNITY,
This is the first newsletter in the new year, 2020!! I hope everyone had a joyful and peaceful holiday season with family, friends and loved ones. I missed everyone and it’s SO great to be back at school and to hear all about your festivities.
During the break, I had an opportunity to reflect on the first half of the school year. We are grateful for the small, close knit, and welcoming school we have at 2543 Pittsfield Blvd. We have had many school events that have brought our community together such as kicking off the year with Popsicles on the Playground, PTO Breakfast, the Fall Fest, Literacy Night, Specials Night, and the Penguin Patch, just to name a few. I hope you were able to join us for these wonderful events.
In addition, I recognize that this school year, we have had some challenges with students transitioning to school due to a range of diverse learners (academically, socially, emotionally, and developmentally). In particular, there has been a rise in students that come to school with varying social-emotional skills that significantly impact their school experience, the learning environment and the school climate, especially in the early grades. After some research, I found that this a national and global phenomenon. As a result, we’ve implemented interventions such as additional adult support, assistance from the school social worker, board certified behavior analyst and the district support team, as well as training and development for our staff to ensure our school continues to be joyful, safe, and productive.
At our upcoming PTO meeting on Tuesday, January 14th, 2020, 6:00 p.m. (5:30 p.m. dinner served), I invite you to hear a guest speaker, Harold Wimberly (Ann Arbor Public Schools Behavior Specialist) who will provide a brief presentation about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and how it impacts our children. I think you’ll find this helpful in understanding more about child development. For more information, click on the flier.
Looking ahead, here’s what we have to look forward to in January and February:
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace March

The results of the assessment help us to personalize learning for each student.

NAAPID Day
National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) is on Monday, February 10th. Through Joe Dulin’s (founder of NAAPID and retired AAPS educator) vision over twenty years ago, we continue to celebrate this day to honor our parents and show them what our students are learning in school. A colleague shared with me that after attending the 1995 Million Man March, Mr. Joseph Dulin came back inspired to help our community. He envisioned and started National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID).
We invite ALL parents, not just African American families to set aside some time on this significant day to visit Pittsfield. Please join us for a Continental Breakfast at 9:00 a.m. During the afternoon, we invite you to a Family Literacy Luncheon at 12:00 p.m. Throughout the day you may visit classrooms and eat lunch with your child. The 1st Lunch Period is 11:52 a.m.-12:40 p.m. for our lower elementary students (Y5, K, 1st, and 2nd grades).
