New Titles Based on Student Recommendations
Black Butler by Yana Toboso
Japanese Manga. From the publisher, “Earl Phantomhive is a giant in the world of commerce, Queen Victoria's faithful servant...and a slip of a twelve-year-old boy. Fortunately, his loyal butler, Sebastian, is ever at his side, ready to carry out the young master's wishes. And whether Sebastian is called to save a dinner party gone awry or probe the dark secrets of London's underbelly, there apparently is nothing Sebastian cannot do. In fact, one might even say Sebastian is too good to be true...or at least, too good to be human..."
The Eternal Zero by Naoki Hyakuta
From the publisher, “Sibling journalists Kentaro and Keiko are given an opportunity to research the death of their estranged grandfather. Apparently he may have been a Kamikaze bomber, but there is much more to his story than just his death... His story is one of family, love and pacifism in the skies above the Pacific...A debut novel that was published when the author was fifty, The Eternal Zero has become Japan’s all-time top-selling mass-market paperback and the basis of a blockbuster film of the same name.”
Milk and honey by Rupi Kaur
From the publisher, “milk and honey is a collection of poetry and prose about survival. About the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity. The book is divided into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose. Deals with a different pain. Heals a different heartache. milk and honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.”

This month we are highlighting The Porcupine of Truth by Bill Konigsberg. I’ve had both a teacher and student each tell me it was their favorite book in the last year. “The author of OPENLY STRAIGHT returns with an epic road trip involving family history, gay history, the girlfriend our hero can't have, the grandfather he never knew, and the Porcupine of Truth.”

Research Assistance
When Beginning Your Research…
Identify key terms or keywords for your search. Think in the language the articles might be written in. For example: you might find “adolescents” instead of “teen” in a more scholarly article.
Come up with synonyms for keywords. Find other words that mean the same thing. For “college” that might be “university” or “higher education.”
Let one source lead you to another. Skim articles to help you find new search terms or authorities on your subject
Remember: This is a trial and error process-- It’ll take awhile. You might feel lost at first but keep trying.
