Tidbits From the Teacher
Hi Everyone-
I can't believe we've already completed our first week of school! What happened to the time?!?! We had four wonderful days together. Everyone is working so hard to show off those leadership skills that I keep forgetting they are new to third grade- the class is THAT awesome! If you were able to come to the Parent Info Night, I hope you found it helpful. I've included a link to the power point shown on my website. It's on the Parent's Page in my website. Notes are included at the bottom of each slide so read carefully.
Please Do-
1. Fill out and send in the green pages from me.
2. Bookmark my website for you and our shared kiddo to easily get to.
3. Join PTA if you haven't done that yet! (You can do as little or as much as you want but membership helps our school in so many ways!!)
Dates to Remember
Sept. 11th: Grandparent's Day luncheon (visit our room afterwards)
Sept. 18th: 3rd-5th Assembly Day
Sept. 23rd: Early Release @ 12:45pm
Homework
What We're Studying and Learning...
Reading-We are working on how readers make connections to their lives, the world, or another story as they read. We are also working on being aware that readers have questions and think about what they are reading as they move through their books. This seems intuitive but we want students to begin to be more aware of these skills because it helps with comprehension lessons to come.
Have your child to briefly explain the three ways we connect to our reading BY THE END OF THE WEEK.
Grammar- We are also reviewing homophones. Homophone Interaction Site
Ask your child to share at least three sets of homophones and their meanings BY THE END OF THE WEEK.
Writing-Writers are brainstorming ideas about special people, places, and things that are in their lives. From the many ideas, each student picks their favorite one to write a sentence and begin to form a paragraph using correct sentence structures and writing expectations (capital letter/punctuation).
Have your child think of 3 new items they could add to their list of special people, places, or things to write about.
Math- We will spend the week learning about the x5 and the x10 strategies. At the end of the week we’ll begin reviewing place value to 1,200. They will learn that the x10 strategy has a common rule they can always follow to get the answer and that x5 is just half of a x10 fact. *None of this review unit is tested.
Ask your child if they can explain how the x10 and the x5 strategies are related to each other BY THE END OF THE WEEK.
Science- We will be exploring the activities of scientists in our world today. Also, we will be investigating the different types of energy: mechanical, light, heat, and sound. Students will be working daily in their Science NB (short for notebook as seen in planners).
Ask your child these questions by the end of the week: What is energy? How is energy used in our daily lives?
