Food Allergy Awareness Week
This year, Food Allergy Awareness Week is May 8-14. Food allergies impact approximately 32 million people nationwide. From a school perspective, that is nearly six million children, meaning about one in 13 children or almost two students per classroom. Wylie ISD values a safe school experience for all students and staff, including those with allergies. For Food Allergy Awareness Week, our district wants to share important information to help educate others about food allergies.
Did you know…?
The most common food allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, and sesame (recently declared a major food allergen).
Food allergies can trigger a serious allergic reaction called Anaphylaxis (anna-fih-LACK-sis). The life-threatening symptoms must be treated right away with a medication called epinephrine.
Avoidance of the allergen is the best way to prevent a serious reaction.
Some signs of anaphylaxis include trouble breathing, swelling of the throat, itchy or tingling sensation in the mouth, hives, dizziness, lightheadedness, and swelling of the lips.
Anaphylaxis is responsible for about 30,000 ER visits, 2,000 hospitalizations, and 150 deaths each year.
How does Wylie ISD serve those with food allergies?
In Wylie ISD, all staff are annually trained in recognizing the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis.
School nurses also train staff to administer epinephrine in the event that the allergen cannot be avoided.
The Student Nutrition team diligently works to keep the breakfast and lunch menus up-to-date with the latest information on allergens.
