The Power of Purpose
by Sarah Crum, Director of Student Services
My youngest child is one of the most resourceful people I know. As the third child in the family, her needs were often met in the midst of everybody else’s. She learned early on that if she wanted something, she would have to figure out how to make it happen herself. This resulted in precariously stacked books on chairs to reach high shelves, the solo use of kitchen utensils not quite made for the job, and an unabashed confidence that she could accomplish anything she wanted. While I often gasped as I discovered her on the edge of disaster, this child had a fierce drive and independence that comes from knowing what you want and going after it: she has always had a clear sense of purpose. For this, I will always admire her.
But purpose is far more than just an admirable quality. It is our why, it is the foundation of what we do. For those of us lucky enough to have found a sense of purpose in our careers, it is what continues to drive us to be the best we can be. For those of us who find purpose in all the extra we do, it is what allows us to make time for it despite all our other obligations. Purpose transcends the lists of shoulds and have to’s and provides meaning in our lives.
The majority of what happens in our classrooms, even for our youngest students, is grounded in a clear purpose. Teachers often explicitly describe this as they help students make sense of the world around them. As students progress through the grades, the purpose is articulated on unit cover sheets, in project descriptions, as part of a class activity or on the board for the daily lesson. This is such an essential aspect of teaching and it is important that we don’t minimize the power of purpose in our classrooms and in our lives.
I noticed as my children became older, my questions began to focus on the what instead of the why. Their responses became increasingly less detailed: “What did you learn about in school today?”
“Nothing.” I am beginning to wonder whether focusing on asking my children why instead of what might help them nurture that sense of purpose. It is easy to focus on the what that happens each day: the tangibles, the things created that we can hold onto. But we mustn’t forget that the why is at the heart of it all. When I would discover my daughter in the middle of some scheme to accomplish her goal and frantically asked her why she was doing whatever she was doing, she was always crystal clear. Frankly, I think this was the key to her success.

Seeking Indoor Garage Sale Donations
Voyager House is holding its annual Indoor Garage Sale Saturday, March 30th in WCS's cafeteria 8:00am - 2:00pm! It's a giant indoor Reuse/Resale that raises money to benefit Voyager House.
If you have any quality, sell-able items to donate to this sale we'd be most appreciative!! We are looking for furniture, household items, athletic equipment, working electronics, artwork, toys, rugs or anything that could be a treasure to someone new!
We are asking for items that can be sold! If the things you have to donate are really worn out, please bring them to Goodwill instead of our sale. The trips to Goodwill at the end of our garage sales have been really big! Just do you best to consider the shape of the products you donate.
Goodwill does not take the following items. Please refrain from bringing them to our sale, as we will not be able to dispose of them, if they do not sell. Click for list
Drop off donated items from 6:30pm - 8:30pm Friday, March 29th in the WCS cafeteria. Students will be available to help unload your donations. Contact Ted Milks at Tmilks@cvsdvt.org with questions. And THANK YOU for your support!
