Eaton Parent Newsletter
February 18th, 2022
Dear Eaton Families,
We have had another busy week learning at Eaton Elementary. Thank you to all of our families who supported Spirit Night at Zaxby's on Thursday. We appreciate your support.
Lost and Found:
Our Lost and Found box is overflowing. If your child is missing an item, please come by the school to look through our Lost and Found box in the gym. Coach Tew has his first class at 8:30, so please stop by after morning arrival.
Breakfast and Tardy Students:
Breakfast is free to all NHCS students. Our cafeteria staff work hard to make sure our students start their school day off with a good breakfast. If your child is eating breakfast at school, we strongly encourage them to arrive by 7:30 to allow time to eat before going to class. Our tardy bell rings at 7:45. Students who are not in their classrooms when the tardy bell rings must stop by the office for a tardy slip. If a student is a bus rider, and the bus is late, they will be allowed to eat breakfast and will be excused from being tardy.
NHCS Mask Mandate Lifted:
On February 16th, NHCS Board of Education voted to lift the mask mandate, making masks optional for all persons within NHCS buildings, effective February 18th. Per CDC requirements, masks will still be required on school buses.
Effective February 2st, the state will no longer recommend that schools conduct contact tracing or that students or staff exposed to COVID, but who are asymptomatic, stay home from school. Because New Hanover County Schools follows the Toolkit guidance, contact tracing by our school nurses will end, and students and staff exposed to COVID, but do not have symptoms, will not be quarantined or excluded from school. The toolkit is available at covid19.ncdhhs.gov and on our COVID Dashboard.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Office of Early Learning is pleased to announce the newest resource to support young readers in North Carolina, “Literacy at Home.” As part of current legislation, Senate Bill 387 directs NC DPI to develop and share a digital children’s reading initiative designed to support the continued growth of North Carolina’s youngest readers. The site is home to easily accessible resources in the foundational areas of reading supported by the science of reading. Developed for each grade level, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, resources are available to support phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language.
