Message from Dr. Bearden – Re: Homework during Fall Break
Good afternoon:
I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that Fall Break is only two weeks away. Please remind your teachers of our expectations to NOT assign any homework/projects for the break. It is absolutely okay to ask our students to read some over the break. I am also NOT talking about students who have procrastinated and have not done work or assignments that should have been completed prior to the break. That’s on them.
I had my Parent and Community Advisory Meeting today and several parents commented how much they appreciate their children having a “real” break and the opportunity that presents for some great family time. Break means break…and it is meant for all….including you and I. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Jeff

Starting on Monday of the update week, these updates will be available for you to install from Software Center at any time which is convenient for you. (Use these Monthly Windows 10 Patching directions for how to access updates. )
However, if you don't go into Software Center and run the install, the install will automatically happen on Thursday at 5PM. Unfortunately, if someone is not at school at 5PM on Thursday, the update will run first thing Friday morning. You may want run the install sometime this week so that this interruption first thing Friday.
Also, please shut down your devices at the end of EACH day. Issues with updates seem to be happening because devices are not being restarted regularly.
Action Item:
-Run the install from software center by Thursday afternoon to avoid having it automatically installed Friday morning. (directions linked above)
-Remember to shut your laptop and panel down EVERY day so that they receive the proper updates.
Spotlight on SIOP Strategies: Round Robin
Round Robin White Board—Have students sit in small groups. Give each group a white board (or sheet of chart paper.) Each student will write down one thing that was learned in the lesson. They pass the white board around and each person continues to write. The group shares out with the class.
Read to Me
Hello, Mashburn family!
We are calling on you all to help our newest readers achieve a lofty goal. Kindergarten and 1st Grade students who come to us without a firm foundation in literacy often have difficulty catching up to their peers. To make sure we give them an even playing field, we are asking for you to help them hear 500 books read aloud.
On Tuesday , August 20, we are launching a Read to Me initiative to help us meet this goal for each of our “Read to Me” students.
Have 10 minutes? Need a break from a stressful day? Come on down to the kindergarten and 1st Grade hallways! Each teacher has an RTM center close to their door. Simply pull one or two names, ask for the students and read them a book out of the Yellow Bin books. There is a book basket with books to read, or you can bring your own. Once you finish, smile a space on the student’s card, and send them back to class.
Please see a more detailed set of directions by clicking this link Below are some pictures so you will know what to look for when you visit.
Nearpod: Time to Climb!
Time to Climb is a highly interactive gamified activity within the Nearpod student engagement platform. Students race to the top of the mountain against the clock by answering multiple choice questions. Time to Climb activities are great for bell ringers, learning checks, exit tickets and more. Plus, because it’s built within the Nearpod platform, it seamlessly integrates with the rest of your lesson (after all, we hate multi-tab teaching just as much as you do). Your students are going to LOVE this new feature in Nearpod!!!
Digital Citizenship Posters
The main points of the poster are:
*Follow school guidelines--they are here to protect you.
*Research topics using multiple sources
*Give proper credit when you use others' work
*Create strong passwords and keep them private
*Report bad online behavior
*Remember that what you post online is permanent
*Be a problem solver
*Take care of school technology
*Choose kindness
The more we continue to have these conversations with our students, the better digital citizens they will become and the less issues we will have!
Thanks for your help with this!
