RCES Learning Commons Connections
1st Quarter Report
2017-2018 GOALS
Personal Professional Goal: To continue to build relationships with students and teachers by attending grade level planning weekly and observing individual teachers. All observations will be written up using the Notice and Wonder protocol.
Celebrations
- 1st grade is now checking out from the shelves daily
- 2nd-5th is using the self checkout by typing in their names
- 1st grade is finding their name on the class list and checking out on their own
- Kindergarteners are scanning their library cards and books with very little prompting
- PreKindergarteners are working towards scanning their cards and books with each story time visit
- The origami math lessons have gotten better with each class. I am learning so much about how I need to adapt my teaching to best suit these students.
- Students are asking for additional paper to make the origami cubes
- 3 different librarians (2 from Lex1 and 1 who is a stay at home mom for the time being) have said they like the LC environment, thought the students were very self directed, and liked our social media presence
- Teachers are wanting to schedule their classes to come in again, or asking to come in because of what another teacher has told them.
- We are receiving a FREE author visit from Max Brallier, the author of the Eerie Elementary series and The Last Kids on Earth series from Scholastic on December 5.
Origami October Makerspace
We have also had the makerspace area open in the mornings before school. Students have been making Halloween origami, building with magnet tiles, stacking cups, and working with Legos.

Morning Makerspace- House building
Construction Junction November Makerspace
We will be building out of paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, boxes, legos, Lincoln Logs, magnets, and cups. Students will have task cards challenging them to build something with certain items. Who wouldn't want to see an Eiffel Tower build out of toothpicks?
Collection Stats through October 25th
Learning Common Checkouts
- 99 Teacher Resources (1.25%)
- 12 Professional books (0.15%)
- 2,040 Fiction books (25.78%)
- 2,990 Picture books (37.79%)
- 96 Biographies (1.21%)
- 2,306 Nonfiction books (29.14%)
- Other (Big Books, Equipment, & AV) (4.68%)
- 57 titles have been been on hold this year so far, with 40 of those titles having never been put on hold before. Many of these titles are new to the library, but some of the credit goes to renewed interest to older books, ie. origami titles.
In studying the statistics from the first 9 weeks of school I see that our Everybody section is being used by the majority of our population. Nonfiction is not very far behind, but it will also be increasing in the next month as 4th grade is beginning a unit on Nonfiction so they will each be required to read from that section during their daily independent reading time. The Fiction section is also well used by our upper grades (3-5) with some 1st and 2nd graders moving into the easier chapter books with encouragement.
The new books to the collection are being checked out at a good rate, with the new graphic novels being constantly on hold. I have been making a list of titles that students want to read to see if they are appropriate for our students and would make a contribution to our collection. I have placed 2 orders so far this year from the budget and I have spent some of the book fair profits to upgrade our graphic novels and popular series.
I have been talking with students and recommending books for them to try, but after a conversation with Mrs. Nichols, I have really been trying to do more each day. I have also suggested a few titles for teachers to read, and the response so far has been positive.
