Winter Park Band Notes
October 22, 2017
From Mr. Blackmer
Congratulations to the Wind Symphony and Winter Park Orchestras on a terrific fall concert this past Thursday evening! The musicianship and level of performance was extremely high, especially for so early in the school year. I told Mrs. Bitters Thursday night that the Park Philharmonic Orchestra has not sounded so good, so early in the school year, since my arrival at Winter Park five years ago - it was very impressive! We are so very fortunate to have such a great orchestra program here at Winter Park, and the "full orchestra experience" is such an integral part of a complete music education for our Band's wind and percussionists!
This Thursday is our fall Band concert featuring the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and all three jazz ensembles. The concert begins at 7 PM. Please be there to support your child and our Band Program!
Many thanks to the senior parents (and especially Dana Adkinson) for the life-like senior posters displayed at Friday's Marching Band performance! I know that many, many hours of time went into creating each one of those student posters, and all of the time and materials were donated! Thank you!
Congratulations to the "Sound of the Wildcats" on their performance at the University Classic on Saturday! The Band sounded great - putting them in a good position for Marching Band MPA on November 4, and our drumline section earned the percussion "caption award!"
All the Best!
Mr. Blackmer
Marching Band Uniform Cleaning
With Marching MPA right around the corner, it’s time to clean all of the uniforms and we need a lot of volunteers. Please stop by the Band Room on Monday, October 23 and pick up a set of 10 or 20 uniforms (or more if you are willing). For every ten uniforms cleaned and returned, your student's account will receive a credit of $5.00. Mary Bernard will provide the directions, pods, softener sheets, and student information sheets for this to make it as easy as possible.
With another football game coming in a couple of weeks, we will need all uniforms returned on Wednesday October 25 during or after marching band rehearsal.
Butter Braid Pastry Fundraiser
The Band started their final fundraiser of the school year this past week. They will be taking orders for Butter Braid pastries now through Monday, October 30. The instructions for taking submitting orders through Charms can be found on the Band website.
Butter Braid is a frozen pastry with 6 flavors. Customers can take it out of their freezer when they are ready to enjoy it. The cost is $14 per pastry, and $6 credit for each sale goes into the student's Band account. Brochures were distributed last week to Band students. Your customer sales must be entered in your Charms account and monies collected submitted by October 30. Delivery will take place at 7 PM on Tuesday, November 14 in the Band Room.
Solo & Ensemble MPA Registration
Registration for the 2018 Solo & Ensemble MPA is now open! Registration will be done through a Google Form found HERE. All events require a separate registration, and all registrations are due by Wednesday, November 15. Any Guard students or those wishing to enter a jazz combo should speak to Mr. Clemente directly before the November 15 deadline.
Remember that all Band students are required to prepare either a solo and/or ensemble, although they are not required to do S&E MPA. Those students who choose to not do MPA should prepare a solo and/or ensemble (following the same requirements as those doing MPA) and sign-up for the S&E Recitals the week of February 5, 2018.
As has been done for the past few years, solo & ensemble music can be purchased through the Band Program if requested by Wednesday, December 6. To request a specific piece of music, complete the Google Form found HERE.
In addition, Beethoven & Co. will be holding two music perusal nights in Orange County in November. The first is at Lake Nona High School on Thursday, November 16 from 4 PM - 8 PM, and the second is at Apopka High School on Monday, November 27 from 3 PM - 6 PM. In both cases, you will be able to "bill" any music selected to the Winter Park Band account that night and take the music with you. Just make sure that you have your student picture ID to prove that you're from Winter Park High School.
Play-Off Game Update
Because of the football team's win this past Friday evening, it has been confirmed that there will be a play-off game at Showalter Field on Friday, November 10.
The full Marching Band will participate in play-off games (depending on location). If a student has a scheduling conflict with any play-off game, the parents are asked to e-mail both Mr. Blackmer and Mr. Clemente to let them know.
Should the play-off schedule reach Friday, November 24 (the day after Thanksgiving) a sign-up volunteer pep band will be organized for that game.
Trunk-r-Treat
Trunk-r-Treat is an annual tradition with the Winter Park Marching Band where students are encouraged to dress up in costumes for the rehearsal, and parents distribute candy out of the trunks of their cars following that rehearsal. This year's Trunk-r-Treat will take place following rehearsal on Monday, October 30.
