Myocardial infraction is caused when your coronary arteries are blocked. Overtime, the coronary artery narrows due to the build up of cholesterol and other substances. The coronary arteries give the heart muscle its own blood supply. If that artery gets blocked the heart muscles won't retrieve nutrients and oxygen and the heart tissue will die.

Another cause of a heart attack can be a spasm of the coronary artery. The use of illicit drugs such as cocaine can cause a life threatening spasm.

Risk Factors~

You are more likely to get this disease because of;

Age, Tobacco Use, High Blood Pressure,

Diabetes, Family History of heart attack, Lack Of Physical Activity,

Obesity, Stress, High Blood Cholesterol,

Lupus, Illegal Drug Use, and/or History Of Preeclampsia

  • Medications- Medications can help your damaged heart function more properly to prevent a small heart attack.
  • Lifestyle factors- Maintaining a healthy weight and having a heart-healthy diet is key. Not smoking and exercising regularly along with managing stress and controlling conditions that can lead to heart attack is vital.

735,000 Americans have a heart attack each year.

When having a heart attack, the number one thing people jump to is Aspirin, its a blood thinner which allows the blood to pass around the blood clot and get to the heart.

If available, other things to try include; Thrombolytics ("clot buster"), Antiplatelet agents (stops clots from growing), Pain relievers (relieves pain), Nitroglycerin (vessel dilator), Beta blockers (relax your heart), ACE inhibitors (lowers blood pressure)
