M5 The Great Depression
Lesson 4
The Great Depression and Herbert Hoover
The Great Depression, a severe economic downturn that took place in the 1930s, was caused by various factors. One major cause was the stock market crash of 1929, where stock prices fell drastically, leading to many investors losing large amounts of money. Additionally, there was an unequal distribution of wealth during the 1920s, with the rich getting richer while the working class struggled to make ends meet. This economic inequality contributed to the economic instability that eventually led to the Great Depression. Other factors that worsened the situation included high levels of debt, both personal and national, and a decline in international trade.
Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States, serving from 1929 to 1933 during one of the most challenging times in American history, the Great Depression. Initially praised for his work as a humanitarian and his efforts in World War I relief, Hoover faced harsh criticism for his handling of the economic crisis. Many blamed his policies for worsening the depression, leading to high unemployment rates and widespread suffering across the country. Despite his efforts to implement programs like the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which aimed to provide financial support to businesses, Hoover was unable to turn the tide of the economic downturn. His presidency highlighted the need for strong government intervention during times of crisis, a lesson that would shape future policies during the Great Depression and beyond.
