What's New at Walnut?

September 13, 2021

APEX Leadership Fundraiser Starts Today

Walnut Wildcats will participate in their first outdoor assembly on Monday, 9/13, with the APEX Team. Students will hear about our upcoming Fun Run on Thursday, 9/23, and the different ways they can participate in the Apex fundraiser. Walnut PTA has worked with APEX for several years, and they always do a great job building unity & energy across campus. Historically, APEX has been PTA's largest fundraiser each year. Money raised makes it possible for students to have assemblies, field trips, and participate in music, art, dance/movement, & a full PE program. Students will bring home more information today.

On the day of the Fun Run, each class will have its own track and the schedule will be staggered throughout the day. We will only be able to accommodate a limited amount of volunteers this year. Please let your child's teacher know if you would like to volunteer. A negative COVID test the week of the Fun Run or proof of vaccination is required.

Throughout the next 2 weeks, ask your child about the leadership lessons they are learning from our coach, Cesar--AKA Cesar Salad!

National Hispanic Heritage Month

Walnut is joining all of CVUSD to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, beginning September 15th. It is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic Americans in the United States. The observation began in 1968 and was expanded by President Reagan in 1988. At Walnut, teachers will be incorporating children's literature and themes that celebrate the contributions of Hispanic/Latino Americans. Other special recognitions this year will include Black History Month, Women's History Month, and Asian American/Pacific Islander History Month.

Counseling and Social-Emotional Intervention

Walnut is so happy to have Ms. Jannelle Guillot returning this year as our school counselor. Ms. Guillot works with students on Tuesdays and Fridays, and she also communicates regularly with families. In addition, she visits classrooms to facilitate community circles and give lessons on a variety of topics, including strategies to build friendships and reduce anxiety. Walnut teachers all use Sanford Harmony social-emotional learning curriculum to help students build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging at school. For the first time this year, Walnut is incorporating a social-emotional intervention program in addition to its academic intervention program. Mrs. Kris Lopez and Mrs. Dyan Gennette will be providing small group and 1-on-1 support to help students readjust to a full-day school environment. Parents will receive a permission slip before their child participates in any ongoing intervention. Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Wall, awall@conejousd.org, or Ms. Guillot, jguillot@conejousd.org, if you would like more information.

Walnut Elementary

Walnut is a neighborhood school with a BIG heart, where every student is valued and encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning. We believe in developing the whole child, so we invest in the visual and performing arts, technology, and physical fitness in addition to traditional academics. We were recently one of five schools in Ventura County named as a California Honor Roll School. We are committed to our mission statement, Academic Excellence for All in a Safe, Enriching Environment. Walnut has an active PTA, School Site Council, and English Language Advisory Council. Each of these groups of parents and community members would LOVE to have YOU join them in making sure Walnut provides the best possible learning environment for students and families.
