A NOTE FROM OUR READING COACH
January typically brings us cold weather! When it’s too cold for your children to go outside, have them snuggle up with a good book instead. Make it more fun by cuddling up with a warm blanket and drinking hot chocolate.
$1 Bookstore News: The $1 Bookstore is open on the third Thursday of each month. January’s bookstore date is Thursday, January 17th. The bookstore will be open in Mrs. Porter’s room from 7:20-8:00 a.m. on this date. All books are $1 and students may purchase one new book each month.
Reading Tip of the Month: Try these questions before, during, and after reading with your child to help strengthen reading comprehension.
Before: Make a prediction. What do you think this book will be about? Why do you think that?
During: Ask questions and make comments along the way. Why did the character do or say that? What do you think is going to happen next? etc.
After: What was the problem in the story? Did the character like it when…? Does this book remind you of any other books you’ve read? etc.

Media Center News . . .
Our Spring Book Fair will be Friday, February 1st - Friday, February 8th (7:30-3:00 M-Th, Closing at 10am on Friday the 8th). This fundraiser allows us to purchase great books and materials for our library with the money we raise. Don’t forget to send book fair money in an envelope labeled with your child’s first and last name. We accept cash, debit/credit, check, and ewallet payment. You can also shop the book fair online at http://www.scholastic.com/bf/concreteprimaryschool. There is no shipping cost for online orders, and orders are usually mailed to the school the week after the fair ends.
We will be open during Muffins for Moms, however it is the last day of our fair so some items may be sold out. Please plan to shop before this event if you’d like to avoid large crowds. More information and a book fair flyer will be sent home with your child the week of January 28th. We look forward to seeing you at the book fair!

Notes Concerning Attendance
Regular attendance is essential if students are to be successful in school. It is important that every student attends school each day, arrives on time, and stays the entire day.
Students should be in the classroom to begin the day by 8:00 AM. Students who arrive in their classroom after 8:00 AM will be marked tardy. When a child enters a classroom late, it disrupts both teaching and learning. Please help your child by establishing procedures to ensure prompt arrival at school. Tardies are considered unexcused unless a medical note is provided. Students who are tardy ten or more times are required to meet with our Attendance Team.
Unless necessary early dismissals should be avoided. Students leaving early often miss important last minute instructions and/or reminders. Interrupting classes to call students to the office also distracts other students and interrupts end of the day classroom routines. Excused early dismissals are granted for illness (sent home by school nurse) and medical appointments (medical notes should be returned the day returning to school). Students with excessive unexcused early dismissals are required to meet with our Attendance Team. More than 10 unexcused early dismissals are considered excessive. Early dismissals are not allowed after 2:00 PM.
Please help us teach our children the importance of being on time to school each day and remaining in school until dismissal. Together we can set the stage for future success by creating habits that will follow them throughout their school experience.
