Native American Heritage Month
November was Native American Heritage Month. To honor this month, Olivia's grandmother came in and gave a presentation to the class about her Native American heritage. The students were very interested in her presentation! They learned all about the Wampanoag people, and their connection to the first Thanksgiving!
Exploring Compost Bags!
A couple weeks ago, the children finally observed their compost bags. The compost bags were not touched since the beginning of the year. The students noticed that the dry dirt, that they originally put into the bag, was now wet. They also noticed that the leaves and fruit had disappeared. Some students even observed that the worms were bigger! Tomorrow is our last lesson in the soil unit. We will start the new unit, changes, next week.
Fun at the Writing Museum
2P finished the writing unit on small moment stories. Therefore, we had a museum share. The students walked around the room and read other students writing. At the end of the museum, the students gave each other compliments! Our next unit in Writer's Workshop is Lab Reports. The students will begin to understand how scientist write and create lab reports.
Communities!
To end our unit on communities, the students talked about the benefits of living in an urban, rural, and suburban area. The students also discussed the negatives when living in these areas. After our discussion, the students had to decide what area they would like to live in. The class created a human bar graph to figure out how many students prefer each area. The majority of the students in 2P prefer to live in an urban area.
Maps!
Our next unit in Social Studies is maps. The students will learn all about maps and how to use them. To start the unit, the students looked at a map of the classroom to find the hidden treasure chest. The students learned that a map key can help you identify things on the map. The students used this information to help them on the hunt! The students then sketched their own map of the classroom and created their own map key.
