Highlighting Library Resources
Our Gale Databases
In the last library newsletter, I highlighted a unique electronic resource from our databases titled Testing & Education Resource Center. For this article, I’d like to focus on the remainder of our commercial databases. We currently subscribe to 8 additional databases from Gale. Each of these 8 databases are similar in their usage requirements. The 8 databases include:
Biography Resources In Context (Periodical articles and multimedia content on the most influential people, past and present)
Gale Virtual Reference Library (Actual library reference books scanned for use anywhere)
Gale Literary Resources
LitFinder
Literature Resource Center (The largest of the 3 literary databases. This is an immense repository of information about authors, literature, and literary periods)
Opposing Viewpoints in Context (Pro & con articles on current, major social issues)
Professional Collection (Mainly academic journals - Great for teachers or for advanced research)
Students Resources in Context (Research on virtually all of the subjects we offer at SSHS.)
All freshmen have now been trained on how to use these databases. They know how to:
Access the databases with password use
Conduct advanced searches (filtering by content type, document type, and publication date). They can even find refereed journal articles and search by lexile range.
Highlight and take notes electronically on all articles
Download highlighted/notated articles to Google Drive and upload to Google Classroom.
Retrieve MLA and APA citations for all content
If you would like to learn more about these amazing resources, and/or receive a tutorial on how to use them in your classes, please contact Carol Forbes. Teachers can even align these resources to CCS standards.
Your students are ready to navigate these wonderful resources. Let’s put them to work.
