Counselor's Corner
I got to visit the kindergarten classrooms this week and provide an anti-bully lesson. I explained that bullying is repeated behavior, that is on purpose, and that causes a student to feel afraid or that the other person has power over them. We also read the book, The Bandaid Chicken and discussed how students can stand up for themselves and others like the Bandaid Chicken. I enjoyed visiting your child's classroom and look forward to visiting again next week.
Sincerely,
Nancy Logue

Goodwill Donation Program
Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program for Children
Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program for Children is a child sexual abuse prevention and education program that teaches elementary school-aged children their bodies belong to them, they have the right to say “NO!” to touches to their private parts for “no good reason or just to play a game”, and to tell an adult about any touches that make them uncomfortable.
The program will be presented to Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade students at Harrison Parkway on 11/20/17. Each presentation is given in individual classrooms and will last approximately 30 minutes. Although not required, each child's attendance in the program is strongly recommended. To learn more about Chaucie’s Place visit: www.chauciesplace.org.
If you have any questions, please call Nancy Logue at 915-4210. Thank you for your support of our efforts to keep the children of our community safe.
If you YOU DO NOT WISH your child to participate in the Smart Steps program, please contact Nancy Logue, School Counselor at 915-4210.
Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 2:00PM. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 2:00PM to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.
Textbook & iPad Rental Fee Information - 2017-2018 School Year
*School textbook and iPad rental fees are now PAST DUE.
*When viewing student fees in Skyward Family Access, there will be multiple fees displayed that may look similar. However, for grades 1 through 4 there will be one for textbook fees and one for consumable fees. Kindergarten students will have a textbook, consumable and material fee. Textbook and consumable fees may include digital resources or periodicals depending on the grade level. If your student is renting an iPad, a separate fee will be listed.
*You may pay online via the EFunds option through Skyward Family Access, or by a check payable to HPE. Please allow 10 working days to see the payment posted to your account.
* Please contact Dori Morgan, HPE Treasurer at 317-915-4210, if you are interested in a payment plan or want information about our Free and Reduced Cafeteria / Book Fee Assistance Program.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, you still need to contact the office (by phone or email) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
A Note from the Nurse
Accidents happen during the day such as bloody noses, toileting issues, muddy puddles at recess, food/milk spilling at lunch, etc.... The clinic has a limited supply of clothes, so please pack an extra change of clothes (socks and underwear too!) in your child's backpack for the unexpected mishaps. If I do not have anything that fits your child, you will be receiving a call for a change of clothes to be brought to school, since your child cannot return to class or ride the bus home with soiled or wet clothes. Also, I do not have any extra shoes in the clinic, so if your child wears flip flops that are falling apart, please consider having your child wear shoes in better shape so I don't need to duct tape the broken shoe to your student's foot. Thank you for your support!
HPE Cafeteria News
Please see the attached flyer for our menu and each day students who purchase a Meal Deal will receive a free treat! Students not getting a lunch may purchase the treat for $1.00.
Any treats that contain allergens for students who have food allergies that are flagged will receive a fruit sidekick as an alternative.
As a reminder, please make sure your child's lunch account is current with funds. I send out email notices thru Skyward and you may sign up in Skyward to receive alerts as well.
When sending in money, please put the money/check in an envelope with your child's name, student ID number and teacher to assure funds are put in the correct account. No nicknames, please.
All lunches include an entree, milk, two vegetables if desired as well one fruit. This is a Meal Deal. Lunch entrees are the hot lunch, Chef Salad, turkey and cheese sandwich, pizza pack or PBJ sandwich. Lunch menus along with nutrition information can be found on the website for HPE under the Food Service tab.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Thank you!

Help Us Reach Our Goals!
This year, we’re offering a new way to help the PTO. No selling to friends, family, and co-workers; no knickknack toys to collect; no paperwork to manage or orders to pick up. With our No Frills Fundraiser, 100% of your donation will stay with the PTO. Simply send in the form with your donation and you are done!
But if you look forward to your favorite freshly baked cookies each year, Cookie Dough, Pretzels & Popcorn Sales began this week. Products will arrive just in time for the holidays! Money and Order forms are due Thursday, October 26. Last year our cookie dough sale raised over $10,000! Extra forms for both fundraisers are available in the school office. Thank you for your participation and support!
Get Involved in the Classroom
It’s not too late to become a Room Parent. Each classroom has a group of volunteers to help with class parties and to show our teachers how much they are appreciated. If you would like to help in your child’s class, contact the PTO and we will connect you with the other classroom volunteers. Current Room Parents: this school year, we are trying something different by no longer having a “lead parent.” If your group could use some guidance, email us and we’ll make sure you have everything you need. HPEptoVolunteer@gmail.com
We NEED You
The PTO is looking for immediate help with the Silent Auction which takes place in May.
With your help, we will be able to raise enough to give each of our teachers grants to buy supplies for their classrooms and to start off the school year with an ice cream social where parents and kids meet their teachers, tour their new classrooms, and reconnect with friends while enjoying a frozen treat. If you’d like more information or are ready to get started, please email us! HPEptoVolunteer@gmail.com
***Thanks so much for providing our teachers with dinner during Parent-Teacher Conferences. We couldn’t have done it without your help!***
Our next PTO meeting is Tuesday, November 14th at 6:30 in the school cafeteria.

State Park Passes Now Available for Loan from the Library
With temperatures finally on the rise, thoughts are turning to the great outdoors and exploring all that Indiana has to offer. In honor of the state’s bicentennial, the Indiana State Library has now provided each library with a state park pass for loan to library cardholders.
When you are ready to hit the trail, simply stop by the Adult Services desk at either the Fishers or Noblesville Library and check for availability. Due to high demand, the passes will be available on a first come, first served basis, with no holds or renewals available. Passes can be checked out for up to 7 days.
Like other library materials, if passes are returned after the due date, late fees will apply. If passes are lost, a full replacement cost will be assessed. For further information, check out the library’s website at www.hepl.lib.in.us.
